got a question for all you grunts out there

Ok I’m looking to buy a new ar and I know I want a colt 6920 or a 6940 but I want to know what kind of accessieries I should go with on it

what are you going to use it for? all around shtf rifle? RDS (Eotech or Aimpoint on a LaRue mount), rail (KAC RAS for the 6920), good light, pmags, Vickers sling, Geissele SSA trigger, and ammo.

If you are new to the AR world please take the time to read the stickies @ the top of the page by NCpatrolAR and Gotm4. Good information available there. Also check out the stickies in the Tech Question discussion. Thanks,

-Jax

Lots of ammo, and even more training.
As suggested, read the stickies posted. Once you figure out the intended purpose of your rifle, and your particular shooting style and desires, you can look at accessories that you feel will assist, not make you, into being the best shooter you can be.

I’d go with the 6920 and add the following if you have the coin. My Ideal set up:

DD Lite Rail 12.0 FSP or Omega if you want to install it yourself

Aimpoint M4S, or H-1 for most battery life or one of the new EOTech models (I prefer the reticle)

Vicker’s Blue Force Gear padded sling

SF X300 light mounted at the 12 O’clock position in front of the FSB

Shorty Tango Down VFG mounted under the FSB

Blue Force gear Redi-Mod

Magpul Battery Assist Device and Mod 4 charging handle

A Magpul stock of your flavor ( I lean towards the ACS or SOCOM stock)

Ammo and training.

If you just want a to keep a bare minimum weapon, a red dot sight, a light on a MI FSB light mount and good padded sling is a must and will give you a good functional weapon. You can add the above listed as funds become available.

Thanks a lot guys ill diff will look at them all and see which suits me the best and the reason is because I’m joining the marine corps and want to get more accuianted with the ar platform

They will most likely force you to shoot their way and to maintain your weapon their way. Because of this, it probably isn’t a good idea to get an AR and learn a bunch of “bad” habits. However, there is a lot more you can learn here that may be valuable to know in the future. They teach you everything you need to know, not everything.

less is more- keep the rifle stock shoot it a while (several thousand rounds should be enough!) then based on this experience ,what you see others (preferably at a class) running with, then add stuff from there. The used gear for sale ads are full of items put on the rifle used once or twice and decided it wasn’t for the shooter. Use the experience of others to keep you from accumulating a full spares bin.
I say if the gun is for home defense a good light and your close range non magnifying opyic of choice. if it is a range toy would’t need a light. on a carbine unless you need(?) to hang a bunch of stuff off the rifle you may not need a rail forened. I see ar carbines weighing 12 pounds with all the crap hanging on them.

I would recommend that you wait until you learn what you are expected to do with your issued weapon after successfully completing recruit training and The School of Infantry.
The accessories used within the USMC are different than what you will find on a common home defense or general purpose rifle because you will be issued things that are extremely rare in the civilian world and how those items integrate with the system as a whole deserve a unique appreciation, appreciation gained through training and hardship.

There are some cross-overs, but anything beyond slings, magazines, lubrication, and skill will probably conflict.
Be careful of what advice you pay attention to.

that being the case i would keep it simple and learn to use the A2 sighting system.

my suggestion is if you want to learn to fire the m16/ar15 before you go in is dont. Your better off knowing nothing and letting you PMI mold you into the shooter you have to be. You may pick up some bad habits that may carry on to the range if and when you make it to grass week and the shooting range. But if you have your heart dead set on getting one, get a gi issue sling and a crap load of ammo. You wont be messing around with any type of add ons till after boot and infantry school. Unless they really changed things since i went through jan of 2003

WTF??? No A2 in boot?

To OP, I was in your same position 2 years ago but i already had a AR and magpul’s first dvd. For me , it did nothing but help. Im a range coach now and want to be a CMT if i ever pick up.

My biggest problem is remembering that most Marines arnt “gun people”, and dont know but what they are taught. So I cant say “cycle the action” and have them understand that, but rather have to say "slingshot the charging handle"and similer things.

Thats total BS. I qualified with an A2 from Reagan’s era in 2007. That thing was so worn and silver and such a POS everytime I went to port arms the handguards would fall off (Which for some reason gave the DIs a hard on) But I’m now a 3rd award expert, it didn’t hurt.

Save the A4s for SOI. Boot camp deserves rifles with some history behind them.

Anyway, I would not get anything for a rifle until Ive shot the rifle in a dynamic environment. how do you know you’ll need a VFG or that light won’t get in the way of your sling until you’ve used it?

The only true constant is that shit is constantly changing, huh?

What’s total BS?

OK…didn’t realize until now that you weren’t a “grunt”. Probably best to disregard the advise on that weapon purchase and wait until after you are trained. Follow the advise already stated, of actual experienced Marines on this forum.

I think he was referring to issuing an M16A4 v. M16A2 in Boot Camp.

Replace “That’s total BS…” with “Back in my day, we had to make do with…,” and you’ll have an easier time of getting the gist of the statement.

Boot camp rifles are generally pretty beat up from all the scraping and BS cleaning practices, plus getting flung ass over teakettle onto concrete barracks decks by enrage Drill Instructors when they find them unsecured, or any number of heinous offenses committed by recruits.
