I have seen the 1-4x scopes recommended the most over the 1.5-? scopes for the short range shots. The idea is to get as close as possible to a “True 1 power” at the low end as you can. I’m no expert, just passing on what I have distilled from my own research.
The scope that is considered the top of the line is the Schmidt & Bender Short Dot which is a 1.1-4x. The price is what keeps it out of my reach.
Have you considered a Nightforce 1-4x24? It is a true 1X optic, and would fill your mission needs if the shooter is prudent with trigger/ammo selection.
Just got a Trijicon TR24G 1-4x. Absolutely the coolest optic I’ve played with in awhile. Haven’t done any actual shooting with it yet, but I can’t wait.
Far from an expert here, so take it with a grain of salt. But if you want it today the NSX 1-4 mentioned above is also a valid option. The PST has yet to see the light of day so to speak so it will take a few months to get some feedback from other users. I am holding my breath for them as well hoping they are good to go. My 308 and 16" AR both need glass. I like the Trijicon as well, but the lack of ranging ability, covered knobs… make me question how precise you can be with one at longer ranges.
Aren’t there several 1x6 scopes coming out soon in competition for some Mil contract?? Just thought you might want to wait
There are already 1-6 scopes. I have a Swarovski Z6i and it has great daylight illumination. The new cool scopes coming out are 1-8’s with daylight illumination and bullet drop compensator.

IMHO I really like the Trijicons with the red-dot sitting on top. Its a great compromise of both worlds. The red-dot is perfect for CQB and the Trijicons 4x power is good enough for gongs,Larue targets, exc to 500 or 600 yards. I know the US Optics are nice and hey if you got the coin then go for it but a little pricey for me. Either way all of its good stuff.
