Alright so the gun a 16 " carbine with 1 in 7 twist . I 'm looking for a good bullet to reload that is cost effective and with feed well . I have been looking at the Hornady 60 grn soft point and also the speer 52 grn FMJ in the bulk pack . Can some one point me in the correct dirrection for a good plinking bullet or should I just buy a bunch of PMC 55 grn FMJ-BT for $300 for 1k ?
If I didn’t reload my own… I’d be buying lots of cases.

Out of stock. Just as it’s been for weeks if not longer.
Well I can get a case of PMC for $289.99 SAME BOOLIT
If it were in stock it is 1200 rds for $318. I talked to them and they do not think they will be getting any in, any time soon.
For general purpose plinking, the Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT bullet is an excellent choice if you reload. I’ve also bought your average 55gr FMJ surplus bullets from online suppliers, and they’ve worked well too.
If you want to purchase loaded ammo, the PMC 55gr 223 Remington load would be a good choice. I use it, and have about 4 cases of it that I’m working through.
I’ve also used the PMC X-TAC line, which is their version of XM193 (55gr FMJ) and XM855 (62gr “green tip”).
What do you think about the 60 grn soft point as an AR round do you think it will feed ok ?
Here is a link to the cheapest place I have found to buy the Hornady 55gr bullets for reloading
http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=1940&dir=278|281|1081|1141
$87/ 1000
That’s a great price how are there shipping prices?
Link please.
It’s at my local box store sorry …
Come on up to north Idaho ![]()
The 60gr soft point probably would be OK. I’ve read some anecdotes that say the exposed lead on the soft point will sometimes build up on the barrel extension feed ramps, causing feeding issues.
There really isn’t any reason to stray from the 55gr FMJ if it is for plinking/practice ammo. In my opinion, it would be a waste of money to buy a more expensive bullet for such a purpose. Now if I was shooting at a greater distance (200 yards or more, I’d think about using a 69 or 77gr bullet. But from what you’ve told us, a 55gr FMJ-BT will be more than adequate.
edit
I found where I read about the soft point feeding issue. It is from this thread: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19881. It is the first post, and below is the text I’m referring to:
(emphasis added is my own)
They are actually a penny a bullet cheaper and free shipping from Wideners if you buy the bulk 6000 pack for $459.59 ($76.59/1000 free shipping in 6000 QTY)
I buy whatever non-crap 55gr is the best deal at the time. My current stash has IMI, PRVI, and LC 55 grain slugs.
For a general purpose plinking bullet, it’s tough to beat an inexpensive (cannelured) FMJ. Whether to buy loaded ammunition or components for reloading is a cost:benefit analysis only you can engage in. What is your time worth, and what is the purpose you’re reloading for? Special needs? Wringing out accuracy from a particular platform?
On the Hornady 60 JSP particularly… That (cannelured) bullet (p/n escapes me) was the bullet in my duty load for a lengthy period of time. I shot thousands of rounds of it and saw others shoot many more. It fed in semi, auto, and burst guns through training rotations. It performed well in OIS incidents, as well as umpteen wildlife uses. I like it and still keep it around.

That is a great price but I would be 90 years old before I loaded all of it ! I think I might have to pick up some of there 40s&w 180 grainers too!

That is why you go get yourself some friends with whom you can split a box :))
And maybe (time wise) reload less and shoot more? ![]()
I get the “223 55 Gr FMJ, $60/1,000, 15,000, Machine Pulled Rough”
and the once fired Lake City brass from Mastercast.net
You need to run the boolits through a sizing die to make them round again but they are fine for plinking and short work.
They also have IMR4895 for $15.00/lb but they won’t ship it. Local pick up only.
