Ok I have researched this out as far as possible on the actual round, I have narrowed it down to two choices, well really one the AAC upper as I really like the KAC forends. I also have Noveske in close second, as they make a great barrel, but I’m not to sold on the Troy forend. We know Noveskes stainless barrel is far batter than AAC’s chrome moly barrel, what type of life would I see out of AAC’s? I see its not even chrome lined, but “nitrade” coated, which does what?
Thanks
I bought the AAC, I really liked the URX III on it, and at 950$ it was a good deal.
As far the Noveske lasting longer I would find that hard to believe. I think Nitrateing, or qpq, teffiner, melonite, what ever you want to call itis a good process. There is a lot of info on it here and some current threads if you search.
Nitridingis theoretically better than chrome-lining. Theoretically. You’ll have to get someone from AAC to weigh in on their sales pitch on that.
I have an AAC 9" upper in my safe for review, and it has the 7.0 KAC handguard on it. I would prefer the barrel be 8" as I would prefer to have the shorter overall package with no gap between the rail and can. But, I’d prefer the AAC barrel to the stainless Noveske barrel in this application as I don’t see it as a precision rig, but I don’t know if there is the same shortened barrel life as in 5.56 or what the conversion calculation is.
Given all of that, I still think this is the 330 BLK upper I would buy. The caveat there is I’m considering doing a 300 with a dedicated, “permanent” can in which case I’ll source the parts separately and nest the can inside a Daniel Defense MFR or a Rainier Evolution 12.0 and probably still use the Noveske barrel. I believe that would get me <the equivalent of a 16" barrel.
I really don’t see the .300 as being a barrel burner.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d guess way more life than you’d get from a 5.56 with the same shooting schedule.
Perhaps, but stainless is still likely to have a shorter life than the nitrided chromoly barrel. Would be nice to know estimated life on both either way though. X number of subsonic and Y number of supersonic, if there’s a difference.
I would recommend a Noveske in 300 Blackout as they have always run perfectly for me right out of the box.
Good for 30,000 rounds
