Glock 19 9mm or M&P .45c for CCW?

I am trying to decide between these two handguns. which one should I get for my main everyday carry? I have never shot a M&P handguns before but when I held it not too long ago, I am very confident that I will have no problem handling/shooting the M&P pistols. I’ve shot / owned several Glock pistols before. I used to own a Glock 22 (I sold it mainly because I don’t wanna worry about another handgun caliber other than 9mm and 45 ACP) got a Glock 19 (I sold it to buy the Glock 17) then I sold (and regretted it) to get the Glock 17 Gen 4 (I sold it) because I really don’t like the heavier trigger pull on the new Gen 4. so as of now I don’t own any Glock pistol. I am battling if I want a 15-rounder 9mm or a 8-rounder 45 ACP. I thought about the Glock 30sf but I just don’t really dig it. so I am mainly concentrating between these two handguns. all my handguns right now are full size service pistols. I can concealed all of my current pistols right now but there are just some times that I really don’t feel like carrying a full size handgun. I like the Glock 19 because of my previous experience before. I’ve shot it accurately and it feels good in my hand. very nice size for a 15-rounder 9mm pistol. I also like (now) the M&P 45c because It’s got a 4-inch barrel (not so small pistol. I don’t like it too small) it feels great in my hand and IT IS A 45 ACP (legendary man stopper) If you guys have any opinions about these to handguns, let me know. It will help me decide. like I said, I am very familiar with Glock pistols, I can completely take it apart without any problems. but I heard a lot of good things about M&P pistols. and I really really like the overall size of the M&P .45c but I have zero experience with it.

Thanks in advance

Go with the G19. Or if you really like the .45 like I do, try the M&P 45C. No experience with it either, but it looks and feels good and with a simple trigger kit, could be the ideal carry weapon.

I say go with the glock. With modern ammunition the whole .45 vs. 9mm battle is out the door. Plus if you ever did have to use it I would rather have at least 30 rounds (15 in the gun and an extra mag) vs 16. You can never have too much ammo, but you can have too little.

Another edge the glock has is the trigger is pretty decent out of the box, whereas the M&P series is pretty mushy with not so positive reset unless you add the apex gear.

You already owned, shot well with, and liked the Glock 19.

Get the Glock 19.

Exploit the cheaper ammo cost and use it to invest in more training.

Good point… thanks

I’m carrying the M&P45 Mid size and love it. I have no problems concealing it and I’m pretty accurate with it. It has functioned flawlessly through 2 classes and close to 2000 rounds so far.

However, since you have so much more experience with the G19 then I’d have to say go with the Glock.

Easy day: Glock 19.

Just see which one feels better in your hand. Heh ().

First of all, I’d rethink your position on caliber (that .45 is a “legendary man-stopper”). Really few handgun rounds qualify as “legendary man-stoppers.” All handgun calibers are a compromise, but with modern improvements in materials and performance, the differences between quality ammo among the leading calibers has shrunk. Basically good 9mm defensive ammo is pretty close to similar .45 ammo, although the .45 does a bit better on things like penetration of barriers, and obviously it makes a bigger hole. But testing has confirmed that with modern 9mm duty ammo, you are not really giving up enough performance to matter much, compared to .45 (see DocGKR’s recommended loads in the Terminal Ballistics forum). And when you factor in that with many 9mm pistols, you have much higher capacity, it becomes pretty compelling to consider 9mm as an option.

Second, rather than comparing the G19 to an M&P45, I’d also consider the 9mm M&P’s. If you want something compact, look at the M&P9c, which is a very reliable pistol, still gives you a great grip and 13 rounds (plus it can take the full-size 17rd mags for reloads), and is even easier to conceal than the G19.

G19 if only because the ammo costs are lower. If you really like the M&P their 9mm variants are good too.

I love my g19, you should go with that

Both are good guns. But you are going about this wrong.

First off, pick a caliber. Ignore the gun for a moment…

As previously stated, with modern ammunition, the difference in the terminal effectiveness between the 9m and 45 acp isn’t that much.

The difference in cost of training ammunition between 9mm and 45 acp is substantial.

All things equal, you usually get a higher capacity gun with a 9mm vs. a 45. While “spray an pray” is bad, extra ammo is a good thing.

With this being said, I’d go rent a Glock 9mm and a M&P9c 9mm and shoot them both. Buy which ever one you like better after the shooting session. Their both good guns.

If I had to chose between a Glock 19 and a M&P45c, I’d go Glock 19 (Gen 3 for me) without a second thought.

Stop switching guns. Pick a gun and get familiar with it.

I have both of them, and I really like both of them. If you really want a g19 sized 45 then get the m&p 45c it’s a vary reliable and accurat pistol. The g19 is one of the best pistols you can buy imo so I don’t think you can go wrong ether way.

I have both and they are my two favorite carry pistols
I set them up with 10-8 rears and Hack sight fronts which I like a lot

I would get both and I did

Mike

Glock 19. I never leave home without it.

Go G19

I am currently qual’d on both 9mm Glock and M&P45, both work well, although a G19 is a bit easier to carry than an M&P45.

OP–I have read many of your posts; you seem to acquire and sell a lot of equipment. You might want to STOP doing that, as it is not helping you improve your shooting ability.

Instead, get some extensive training. Learn how to run a pistol. Learn how to live with a pistol on a daily basis. Learn how to care for a CCW/duty pistol. Learn what characteristics you desire in a pistol.

Once you get some basic instruction, get some additional more advanced classes. Pat Mcnamara/TMAC, VTAC, CSAT, Vickers Tactical, ITTS, EAG, Magpul Dynamics, Trident Concepts, Todd Green/PistolTraining.com, and TigerSwan have all offered superb instruction for officers here––you would be ahead of the game to get training from any of them. Some other folks offering good training include: Pat Goodale/PFT, Louis Awerbuck/Yavpai Shooting Academy, LMS Defense, Kyle Defoor, Jason Falla/Redback One, Mike Pannone/CTT Solutions, Jim Smith/Spartan Tactical, Tom DiTomasso/Fulcrum Concepts, Dave Hall, Don Lazzarini, and Rob Haught on shotguns. A lot of these classes are available through Grey Group Training.

“Try out” handguns by renting one at the range or borrowing from a friend, not by purchasing them. After you know a bit more about pistols, are well trained, have corrected any bad habits, and are somewhat competent, you are ready to pick ONE type of pistol to learn to master.

Most people are far better off using a quality 9 mm handgun like the ubiquitous 3rd gen G19, since for CCW and most urban LE duty, there are a lot of advantages in carrying a 9mm–easy to shoot one handed, relatively inexpensive to practice with, lots of bullets in the magazine. When I injured my strong hand a few years ago and lost its use for several months, I found out how much more effective I was using a G19 weak handed compared to a 1911… FWIW, I sold my G26, since except for BUG use on uniformed duty, there were NO times I found when I could carry a G26, but not a G19. Between the G26 and M&P9c, I prefer the M&Pc. Between an M&P9c and G19, I’d generally go with the G19. And between a full size M&P or G19/G17 I’d go with the one that I shot better based on objective time and score, NOT on subjective “FEEL”.

There are several circumstances where going with .45 ACP makes sense:

– If you get issued free .45 ACP ammo at work and not other calibers
– If you already possess a large cache of .45 ACP ammo
– There is a strong likelihood you will have to shoot through laminated glass or wood intermediate barriers and .40 S&W is not an option
– You are issued a pistol type that works best in .45 ACP (ex. 1911) or clearly shoot best with such a pistol
– You live in a state that has asinine laws illogically restricting magazine capacity to 10 rds or less

Other than the circumstances above, 9mm is a superior option for the vast majority of shooters.

As has been stated many times before, it is best to pick ONE type of handgun and truly learn to master it. Purchase 2 or 3 identical handguns–one for duty/CCW, one for training, and perhaps a third one to sit in a lock box at home for use as a back-up or to arm a family member if necessary.

So to summarize, after you have adequate training, purchase a pistol you feel works well. Train with it for a while to prove its utility for you. Then purchase one or two additional identical ones and you NEVER need to purchase any more pistols. Simple.

M&P45c or Glock 19? I’d go with the Glock 19. And this is coming from an M&P fanboy, mind you. It comes down to this: 9mm makes more sense for the reasons DocGKR outlined above.

Huge M&P fan here but in this case I would take 16 rounds of 9mm over 9 rounds of .45 anyday. Although I would take a M&P9c over a G19. Personal preference of course…
