Whoever uses 17 rounds mags in Glock 19 - whatever the reason might be - is there any way to prevent overinsertion, like a sleeve or something?
I’ve used 17 mags in my 19 many times during competitions and had no problems with overinsertion. However, I see your point and your concern. I don’t slam my magazines in hard enough to break anything, so I don’t worry. What are you worried will break? I’m curious now…
I’ve never seen a sleeve or anything, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
Not as worried about breakage as about dislodging the top round, inducing misfeed or just screwing a reload etc. I have never seen this happen, but I’ve heard of this (with pistols and ARs alike) enough to ask…
Yeah, I can see how overinsertion of a G17 magazine with the slide forward might cause a misfeed. (you’ve got me playing with mine right now…haha)
Inserting with the slide in battery, I can feel the round dislodge slightly at the very top, but not much. It seems like the magazine catch keeps it from going upwards too far. Inserting with slide back poses no foreseeable problems though since the rounds in the magazine don’t impact anything.
Interesting question! I’m interested to hear others’ opinions and/or experiences on this. Thread tagged.
EDIT: Another thought along these lines…I wonder if the G18 with it’s extended magazine has the same problem? Seems like the physics behind what you describe would be the same with that model and magazine.
Worry not, free enterprise has solved your problem:

I’ve never had a problem with it in either a 19 or 26. Only problem I ever had was when I began shooting IDPA I’d blank on the fact that the mag was oversize for the pistol and tend to double tap the bottom of the mag in an attempt to seat it flush but practice rectified that issue. I slapped the hell out of the mags and never induced a malfunction (mechanical that is).
When I CCW My G19 or my G26 I usually carry a G17 mag as my reload, why…because I can 2-7 more rounds in a marginally larger package. If I was running my G19 as a open carry secondary w/ Surefire in a more tactical roll, or as a nightstand gun, I would also run a G17 mag.
Not to say that it couldn’t happen but I have never had a problem with over insertion. No FTEs or FTFs. There is a sleeve that you can buy, http://www.topglock.com/item/67761_AG_Grips_Pads_Stocks_AG_MAG_SPACER_GLOCK_17_2.aspx, though I don’t think it adds much other than a marginal degree of comfort, YMMV though.
GU
i seem to recall a youtube video in which a full size mag was installed into a G26 and the gun was forcefully whacked onto a workbench striking the mag. no problems.
there’s a shoulder of sorts on the left side of the mag that prevents overinsertion.
as far as dislodging the top round i don’t really see where that is more likely with a larger mag. being that the glock mags are single stack at the top (as opposed to the AR where it feeds from one side then the other) i doubt it will be an issue. i’ve never had problem using 19 mags in a 26.
A friend had this same question with his 19 and picked up that sleeve in his attempt to answer it. He then had problems getting the mag to seat because if the sleeve is slightly off, it will prevent the mag from seating completely.
Have you had a problem with so called magazine over insertion to justify purchasing such an item?
Just wondering because of the thousands of reloads I have performed with a G19 using G17 mags I have never experienced the first problem.
No never had problem. Probably because I have not ever used G17 mag in G19…
I’ve few 17 mags incoming for purposes other than use in G19, and started to wonder if I can use a 17 magazine for spare. As I’ve said, never seen it happen but have heard somewhere. Could be urban myth.
I do remember being warned about risk of overinsertion/top round dislodgement with AR mags.
I guess that if you were to really pound on the mag on a consistent basis, over time, you would start flattening the inferior shoulder of the the mag notch where the mag release piece fits, and maybe this would cause an over insertion based failure, but I think you’d have to work at this with some intent.
I tried one of those spacers once for like a minute and all I managed to do was a great pinch number on my weak hand during a fast reload so I never want to see one of those things again ![]()
I always carry a G17 mag as a reload whether I’m carrying my G26, G19, or G17. Out of the thousands upon thousands of times I’ve reloaded using this method I’ve never had a malfunction or over inserted a mag. I even tried to out at our range by putting a G17 mag in a G19 and G26 and slammed the mag home using a concrete shooting table and no issues.
IMO the sleeves cause more problems than they solve and are a fix for a problem that doesn’t exist.
As I write this I am wearing a G23 with a G22 mag for a reload.
The majority of my shooting with compact (19/23) and Sub-compact (26/27) Glocks is done with full sized mags.
I almost always have a “1 up” sized mag as a spare when carrying my compacts.
I have never experienced any problems related to this…and I slam those som’ bitches when I reload, usually causing “autofeeds”.
I too am interested.
It’s not possible to over-insert a G17 mag into a G19 unless you use a sledgehammer.
Seriously, they are built so that this can’t happen. There is a shoulder on the magazines that mates up to matching shelf inside the frame of the gun.
I can’t say that I’ve done “thousands” of reloads, but I do use G17 mags in a G19 frequently and I didn’t even think it was possible to “overinsert” it. The G17 mag seats and stops quite positively in the G19 (and G26 for that matter).
Well i guess this is non issue then. Looks like The consensus is it is not even possible, let alone ever been seen. Thanks to everybody for responses.
Ditto what Jeff said^^^
My experience mirrors Jeff’s, but includes 8 years of reloads on a 26 using 17 mags.
No problems here with running G22 mags in my G23 or G27. I carry a G22 mag as my spare for the extra rounds. No issues when qualifing or carrying. I tried the sleeve, it’s ok on the mag carried in the gun if you want the extra grip surface, but it is too bulky for ccw carry on a spare mag.
