At age 57, consider getting your serum testosterone level checked. If it’s running a little low, no faster way to optimize protein use and gain muscle mass in response to a good exercise program than getting testosterone levels optimized. If you do this, please do so working with your doctor…you need to consider optimal dose and route as well as evaluate the risks of testosterone supplementation relative to your CV risk factors and looking at a PSA level and prostate exam.

As stupid as it may sound, try Yoga. I have personally found that it increases my recovery times between heavy bouts of exercise, and also helps ward off injury. If you have any joint or muscle or skeletal issues, it will help to properly realign your body and create a bit of muscle tone too.
Just my .02
This. I’m 53 and it’s been a god send.
I am 57, I have done p90x for several complete circuits. Then I got P90x 2 and that was a lot harder on my joints, wasn’t happy with it. P90 x yoga kicked my ass, I am amazed by people that can do yoga. I have 8 fused vertebrae in my back, don’t bend into a pretzel anymore…
Now I started bodybeast, no this is not a commercial, and that is currently kicking my butt good. Adjustable dumbells would be enough, but they do use a curl bar too. The cardio work out will make you puke.
I think p90 x would be a good start, I did that two years straight. I’m 5’9", 175. I think stretching is very important as well, but not that yoga ![]()
56 6ft 220 T25 yoga and run 2x a week walk 2 x a week 4 to 5 miles
Long distance cycling is easy on the joints and benefits aerobically as much as running. I’m 67 and recently upped my distance (every other day) to 28 miles on a 29er mountain bike. I work out with weights on the non-cycling days. Low weight (60lb barbell) with military lifts, deadlift, bicep curls, shoulder shrug, upright rowing, etc.
I was a distance runner for 22 years until my knee needed scoping from all those years of running impact.
Of course, swimming is best, but gawd it’s boring, for me at least.
I would have to agree with this. Stationary equipment, especially ellipticals and bikes are low impact on joints and are a way to burn calories. May not be a very “fun” thing to do, but if you have the means to buy one, you can set it in front of the tv and just watch an episode of something and bam, 45 mins of exercise done. I don’t prefer this method, but it is a means to a start. But as I always advise, getting a diet In check I feel is key when getting into shape.
