FWIW, my Wiley Clapp CCO, purchased in 2016, had an MSRP of $1448.33 at the time. Got it for $1016.07, new. So it is possible to find a WC close to $1k. Granted, it isn’t SS and isn’t a full size frame, but the savings was substantial. You just need to be patient an look for a good deal.
Under 1k, Ruger. Nothing wrong with SA guns, it’s the company I take issue with. Sorry, I tend to hold a grudge. I’ll never own a SA product.
True story. I went to the LGS to actually take possession of my new TRP the day the news broke about their BS they pulled and told the dealer to send it back, took a 20% loss and told SA to kiss my ass. Sorry, that’s just me. I can’t support them.
It was something political within Illinois a year or two ago. Personally I felt it was far overblown by the interwebz but some people had a real issue with it because it fell in the realm of gun control.
My first 2 Springfields were Loaded models, a stainless and a parked. Both served as duty/off-duty/EDC guns and I was very happy with them. Then I found a good deal on a stainless TRP…True, not under your price limit, but it has been said the TRP stands for “The Right Pistol”. I think if you add the extra to get one, you’ll be just as happy as I am with mine. And no, the wife doesn’t know the stainless Loaded and TRP are different pistols…
I just picked up a S&W 1911 E series for less than $1000 and am very happy with it. I know some folks don’t like the external extractor but I got about 500 rounds through it an no issues at all. I’ve had a bunch of different 1911’s and got to say I like the S&W.
^^ Theoretically yes, it’s (coil) spring loaded so not reliant on proper extractor tension.
A weak link would be extractor claw/hook being properly chamfered/polished.
Most things I’ve seen on the S&W extractor is that most people say that of the external extractors they seem to have got it right. I thought that it was a lot of gun for the money. I’ve never been a big fan of stainless guns but this one is nice. Runs great and believe it or not I’ve been able to recove all my brass because they all end up in pretty much the same spot. Reliability so far is 100% with ball and swc reloads.
Just stick with the original internal extractor, you’ll always be able to get replacement parts. Example, I purchased some SIG P22X pistols of varying type, these were the stamped steel slide models. Suddenly SIG gets the bright idea of going to an external exractor and milled slide- fine except they no longer support the older models. Lesson learned.
Under 1K? Colt, Springfield or Ruger in whatever order you prefer, but I would lean heavily towards Springfield personally. If you are not opposed to ordering on line, stainless TRP’s can be had for right around $1200 or so and are good guns for the money in my personal experience.
