Get The Colt 6920 or a Mid-Lenght Saber Defence?

Hello,

I’ve had my heart set on a Colt 6920 for sometime now, but, after much reading on this site, it looks like alot of you really prefer a quality Mid-Lenght over the shorter gas system, especially, prefering the Mid-Lenght when going with a 16" Barrel.

So now, after all this time of saving for a Colt 6920, I’ve recently started wondering if a Sabre Defence Mid-Lenght might be the way to go, plus they have Std. FCG Pin’s.

The weapon will be used for serious purposes & must be reliable!

I’m really stumped between these two choices, what would you guys get, the 6920 or a Mid-Lenght by Sabre Defence?

Thanks.

GET THE 6920, the larger fc pins will have no downside in the long run. the 6920 is as reliable as it gets, the middy will not preform any better . it may have 2% less recoil if that matters . if you ever need to sell it the 6920 will return more of you money .

You should check out the other threads on this subject but I swear by my SDI 16" middy.

Most would agree that:

Full length 20" gas system: Most reliable.
16 Inch Middy: More reliable
16 inch short gas system : least reliable

In the end, either would be a good choice.

If I had to choose between those two, and I could only have one AR, I’d go with the 6920. Its definitely a proven product. Sabre Defence is not as known a quantity yet. I have no doubt that they’re top of the line, but we already know that the 6920 is a proven performer. Wanna risk a bit of guinnea piggin’?

Hello & Thanks for the replies.

I currently only own Colt’s and I’m very happy with’em (excluding their odd lowers). In fact, I wouldn’t have even been considering another brand for a production made Carbine if it wasn’t for Sabre’s 1:7 Mid-Lenght.

Thanks Again.

I like the look and specs of the SDI midlength flattop upper (although I do wish their catalog was web-based instead of .pdf, uck). The catalog shows it with the flipup front sight/gas block combo, which I’m assuming they can switch out for the F-FSB.

If you have other Colts and this rifle is intended to fit a specific hole in your arsenal that the others don’t, then the question of midlength SDI or Colt 6920 should kind of answer itself. If you already have one 6920 and you’re just looking to broaden your collection, I’d go with the SDI.

JMHO

Hello Rob. Sabre offers the Mid-Lenght with a traditional fixed FSB, it’s Number 90101 for the complete carbine w/1:7 twist. The Flat-Top Mid-Lenght w/1:7 twist is number 90095.

The mid-length gas system is a significant improvement in my opinion.
It fixes many of the problems created by the carbine gas system.

If you look at the premium carbines like a Colt or LMT, they are covered in bandaids to solve for inherent extraction problems.

I say get the Sabre mid-length.
It does not NEED the bandaids.

Since you already have Colts, I would recommend the SDI midlength.

I have the best of both, Colt 6721 carbine with Denny’s Guns-GTS-Rock Creek Operator midlength barrel with F FSB which I installed myself.

I would not trade my SDI midi for a Colt.

Just from my reseach it would seem that the 16" mid-length gas system is the way to go.

I know a serious guy who does serious thing who runs a LaRue mid-length system.

I’ve had both a 6920 upper and a Noveske mid-length upper on a Colt LE Only Lower. I never had any reliability problems with the 6920 but the barrel did “shoot out” after roughly 4000-5000 rounds.

I had the upper rebuilt with the Noveske 16" mid-length and love it except for the weight. While the 223 doesn’t have any recoil per se, the impulse you receive in a mid-length system is distinctly different, much smoother. I have a 14.1" Carbine that is issued to me and I’ve shot the two side-by-side and the difference is there.

Others can provide the exact details but the mid-length system is just easier on the whole gun. I don’t know if it matters much but I also like the slightly longer sight radius of the mid-length system.

I’ve been looking really hard at building a new upper to drop weight off my total rifle. What I want is a 1/7" chrome lined, mid-length gas system, government or lighter profile barrel with fixed, “F” size front sight base. I’ve been waiting 1.5 years for BCM to re-release their equivalent barrel. I’m about to give up and order a Sabre if things don’t shake loose soon.

If it were me, I’d just get the Sabre and be happy.
