General Suppressor Knowledge

Here in Wa state we just had a law passed in June allowing us to use suppressors. Before this we were allowed to own them and attach them to our guns but it was illegal to shoot with them attached to our weapons. This is a subject that I know a little bit about but nothing to extensive. I was wondering if everyone could share what they know about the subject. What is the difference between wet and dry, do you always have to use sub sonic ammo, do they all thread on or do they have ones that slide on over your existing muzzle device and so on. I searched the forums for this info and found a little bit of it but it would be nice to have it all in one place. Any knowledge is appreciated and I hope I’m not the only one with these questions. Thanks.

This thread belongs in the NFA section.

Sorry about that, thanks.

What kind of suppressor are you looking for? Pistol or Rifle?

Pistol suppressors are all thread on. Some of them are adaptable to 3-lug mount for guns such as 9mm ARs or MP5s.

There are plenty of suppressor manufacturers out there. Rifle suppressors come in both the threaded and Quick attach varieties.

If you have an A2 birdcage and want to keep it, Gemtech makes a suppressor that will fit over it.

If you’re willing to get rid of your stock muzzle device on your rifle, there are all kinds of options for mounting.

Advanced Armament is a good company to deal with, and they make great products. Others are Surefire, Ops Inc and Gemtech to name a few. I think there is a list of suppressor manufacturers in the NFA forum stickies. Look there.

My personal suppressor is an Advanced Armament M4-2000. It’s a quick detach 5.56mm suppressor. Some people will get 7.62mm cans such as the Advanced Armament 762-SDN-6 and attach them to their 5.56 weapons as well as their 7.62mm weapons for commonality and the lower cost of having just 1 suppressor for multiple weapons instead of having a 5.56 suppressor as well.

There’s a lot of information out there. Do a lot of reading, hit the stickies and enjoy your can when you end up getting one. They’re a lot of fun.

Also, not to sound like an Advanced Armament fanboy, but on their website, they do have a feature called canU, which basically covers a lot of information on owning a suppressor.
