Gen4 G17 Cold Bore Custom grip work

Just got my frame back from Lane Owens @ Cold Bore Customs: http://www.coldborecustom.com/

I shipped it out to him on 11/Oct and got it back this morning 19/Oct. Thats an 8 day turnaround door-to-door!

Communication from Lane was outstanding. We shot a couple of emails back-and-forth on exactly what I wanted done.

I requested he remove the finger grooves from the front strap of my G17 and add his “Tactical” texture.

I also requested he undercut the trigger guard a bit to help with my “Glock-knuckle” which always tends to get aggravated after about 200rds during a range session.

After seeing the work Lane did on MilitaryMoron’s G19: http://www.militarymorons.com/weapons/pistols2.html#cbc
I decided I wanted the same forward “Memory cut” for the support hand as well. I also had Lane add his “Tactical” texture to this area.

Here’s the pics:

So far everything feels exactly how I wanted it. Lane doesn’t do an overly aggressive undercut to the trigger guard. He does just enough to relieve the sharp corners that tend to batter the knuckle of the shooting hand. He also does a nice radius to the edges of the undercut. He also does something to the surface on areas that he relives that gives it a very similar appearance to the eye as the factory “eggshell” finish on the Glock frames. Nice touch.

The “Tactical” texture on the front strap is very grippy and is exactly what I was looking for.

I will have an opportunity to shoot it on Saturday and I will report back on how it feels to me…

Wow! That looks great, and what a fast turn around. Perhaps I will be sending him my new M&P 40c.

That looks great! Has your Gen4 been reliable?

It has been running flawlessly since I installed the older extractor in-conjunction with the White Sound HRED.

What is a White Sound HRED?

Nice job on the G17. With the GFA and the finger grooves gone it looks like a perfect fit for just about anyone.
Someone, somewhere, descibed Lane Owens work as “not overstated.” I think that’s a perfect description of what he accomplishes.Just what’s needed and wanted and not radical. I’ll be contacting him for the full monty on the grip of my Gen 3 G19.The turn around times are amazing, but if he keeps doing the work as well as he does that’s sure to change as his business increases.

Doc H-Lane did my Gen 3 19 about 4 months ago and he did an outstanding job. I had the finger grooves removed, grip reduction, and rounded the trigger guard. It points much better for ME. It took me a while to decide to get this done but it is the single best mod I have ever had done. I highly reccommend his work.

Thanks for that.I’m pretty much sold on getting it done. It’s the only reduc/stippling that’s ever really appealed strongly to me.There’s other good ones, but the Cold Bore style just suits my taste.

Dammit, Nick, I don’t need to be spending money right now…

…but that’s more or less exactly the configuration I’ve been wargaming in my head for my new G19.

So, I’m horking your pics and taking them to Hatfield’s to see if they can do something similar (though I’ll likely ask them to also stipple to and past the scallops on the upper part of the grip).

I hope you’re happy with yourself.

Related question: Did you just have them remove the ribs from the beavertail of the GFA, or am I seeing a slight reduction, there?

J,

I removed the ribs on the GFA myself. It was a PITA to do without me screwing it up, but worth it.

When I get my G19 I plan to send it to Lane for the same treatment as my G17. I am gonna ask him if he will do the mods to the GFA for me while he has my pistol.

Dude that is sweet!

lane’s work is excellent - i was very pleased with what he did on my G19 and G17.

Finally got out to the range today. I gotta say, HUGE improvement with obtaining my grip during the draw. No more “Glock Knuckle”! And it really seems like I am tracking my front sight better now with the grip work done compared to before. I dig it!

I plan to pick up a Gen4 G19 in the next couple of weeks. It is going straight to Lane for the same treatment.

Lane does good work! I’ve got a 17 frame going out next week for a bunch of grip work and I can’t wait to see what he does with it. He did a USP Compact for me awhile ago and it came out awesome.

How is the Tactical texture on bare hands? Do you find it too aggressive or just right?

I had the Carry texture on my USPC but I definitely want something a little more aggressive for my 17.

For me the tactical texture is perfect on the front strap. It feels identical to the factory texture on the side panels of the Gen4 in-terms of aggressiveness.
