gemtech halo

so im starting to save for a suppressor, is the gemtech halo a good choice? i like the fact that it can mount right up to my A2 and i also like the price.

I got run that I use on my 10.5 sbr. The halo is a grunt style suppressor that is heavy and more or less designed to take some abuse. It is not however as quiet as many of the others on the market. You have a few other companies that make ones that attach to an a2 flash hider as well. There was a thread on tos that listed 2 others. There was a thread on tos of someone putting like 20k plus rounds through one as well.

Anyway I am happy with my halo. I like that it mounts via a 5 dollar peal washer set for the a2 flash hider(or an a1 flash hider with no washer). I’d buy again from gemtech in the future without reserve.

I will say it has a habit of carbon welding itself to the host weapon. It can sometimes be a bitch to remove.

I like mine. Very durable, tough-ass cans. No worries with them in FA even to the point of abuse. Big selling point being that I didn’t need $700 of adapters to use them on 7 5.56 guns, just some $2 peel washers (while I like QD functionality, I don’t see myself having a, ‘tears of the sun’ moment anytime soon  )

Got your PM. Looks like you already found one answer. It also looks like some of the others I was thinking of have gone away and this may be your only option now.

I have one and I am mostly happy with it. With that being said I would not have one if I had to pay full price for it, I got in on that deal they ran a few years ago around thanksgiving. I paid 400 bucks for it, granted it’s not the new version that excepts smith FH but it works on everything else with an added bonus of the BC 2.0.

With that being said it’s been back to the manufacture once for what I thought was a bulged tube. After my 2nd time out with it and only about a magazine of ammo through it I noticed what appeared to be a bulge. Long story short gemtech inspected it and said it wasn’t bulged just poor machining from the factory. They apologized and sent me a t shirt and battle flag.

My only other complaint is it loosens up far too easy on the mount. Other’s mileage will vary on this or at least it seems to.

ETA: There is/was a thread on TOS where someone ran it exclusively on a 10.5 full auto gun. They ran hundreds of mag dumps through it, the can “welded” to the flash hider and it took heavy force and breaker bars to get it off the gun. When they did, the baffles were still good and not eroded, just lots and lots and lots of carbon/lead fouling. It’s a heavy duty can no doubt.

I’ve seen a few people say they loosen up but generally on mine the carbon buildup locks the sucker on pretty good. Seems to be either people have to fight them or some are loose.

Yea that was the thread I was talking about where they guy shot like 20k rounds through it(might have been close to 30).

i have also started looking at this http://advanced-armament.com/product.aspx?pid=191 now i know i cant use my A2 flash hider with this one. but by the time i buy the blackout it ends up being the same price. and if i already have to remove my A2 to use peel washers for the halo. its seems like the aac would be a better choice so you can have a QD can.

The M4-1K is a great deal at that price.

Consider whether or not you’ll ever actually remove the can. Personally, I might as well have gone with a direct-thread can for my uses as I never take the thing off the gun it’s mounted on. the Ranger 2 is $200 less ($550 retail plus you don’t need a $100 mount).

I have an M4-1000. Great can. Although I kind of regret not going with the M4-2000.

Overall I can’t complain about the performance.

While the ability to mount the Halo to any NATO spec flash hider sounds great on paper, in reality it kinda sucks.

The locking collar of the Halo is separate from the silencer and you have to keep track of it in the field. Drop it in tall grass, mud, or water? You are fucked.

A modern rifle silencer should not have extra trinkets to take into the field to get lost and are necessary for the operation of the silencer.

The bore of these silencers are made larger to compensate for the out of concentricity of cheap flash hiders, thus they are louder than modern QD type silencers.

The HALO is made shitty and does not have a a fully welded tube/core. See the post above me for the guy that had a bulge and had to sent it back which is a direct result of this issue. Fully welded cores/tubes are mandatory on any centerfire rifle silencer.

Gemtech products are overall not that great, and are the hobby grade of silencers like DPMS are hobby grade AR-15s.

The HALO is versatile insomuch as it can mount to a huge variety of guns, to include 5.56/5.45mm AKs with 24mm threads.

However it is as big and heavy as a rolling pin.

Does the US military typically issue, ‘hobby grade’ items?

It is a pig indeed.

We ball-wash AAC on this board, get with the program.

Gemtech’s cans are perfectly fine, and their customer service is above topnotch - which is more than I can say for some of the other companies.

Yes, they are perfectly fine for most shooters.

There are better cans available and there are worse cans available. I don’t feel GT rifle cans are generally as good as SF, KAC, AAC.

As for the MIL, they are choosing SF, KAC, and AAC primarily now.

Gemtech does not make any issued silencer and has never won a silencer contract.

Here is a link of silencers listed on the NSN:

I don’t know if just because there is an NSN that they have actually bought them or just bought a few for testing etc…

Don’t even get in the mud on this one. Somebody will sue you, and you’ll still have to spend the money to fight them off even though it’s bullshit.

Ours must have been bootleg.

You didn’t see what you saw, mister. There are a shitpot of bootleg HALOs, M4-96Ds and Raptors out there. Oh, and TPR-Ss too. Oh, wait. And Auroras too.
