GearScout tested a bunch of stocks. Much like Consumer Reports, they did it in a scientific manner.
Magpul UBR came out on top as the most durable stock.

Thats great to hear, but I’m not really surprised. The UBR is built like a tank.
I’m glad they mentioned that there are other factors that come into play and didn’t say “Go out and buy a UBR because they’re bad ass”.
I will be interested to see if there were any issues with buffer tube damage rather than stock damage.
Greeeat…:cray:
My Vltor eMod came in 2nd to last.
Would have been nice if they posted an end result of what failed and when/how.
I thought the EMOD passed some supposed USMC drop test and thus selected for the A5 system.
Anyways, glad to hear the SOPMOD stock does fairly well.
According to Vltor. And I think it was more the A5 system, than the stock itself.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. It’s not like you see smashed Emods all over the place or any other stock for that matter. I’ve abused old school CAR stocks which are about as light and flimsy as it gets and never broken one. Just collapse your buttstock before you do a mortar drill and it’ll last damn near forever.
That’s pretty much the only time I see stocks broken with any regularity…people mortaring their rifle with the stock extended.
The other times I’ve seen a stock broken, the receiver extension is usually pretty damaged as well.
Sticks, don’t worry about it. I’ve used Vltor stocks and they have all been sturdy and high quality. I currently run a CTR and a first gen SOPMOD on my A5.
I used a mod stock for an Iraq deployment, held up fine, am still using it on a rifle at home, not worried about it one bit.
That information will be shown on the website, under the Gear Scout section.
You could have posted the link to “their” website. I had a helluva time trying to find it this morning, and didn’t think to bookmark it.
Nice review, but little overkill from my POV.
The time honored tradition of bashing doors, heads, and other obstacles with the butt plate came into question when I first saw the adjustable plastic versions and I wondered how they would hold up.
You honestly think that dropping a weapon, or weight equal to a weapon, from the height of three feet is over kill in testing?
Underkill if anything. Most shooting benches are more than three foot high and a good majority of people in the US shooting ARs are shooting them off a bench at the local gun club. Myself included. :jester:
I was surprised to see that as well. I would have expected it to hold up better given its price.
+1 to theUBR. Great stock imo and a fairly good test. I’d like to have seen more of a drop myself, but hey - I ain’t the one testing. Thanks for sharing.
+1 It’s extremely realistic and probably the best way to test durability.
UBR FTW!!

Not surprised at all the M93 didn’t do well.
“Will,” as in, “isn’t yet, but will be”?
