Gear Selection Help for NOOB

Hey Y’all:

Starting to get into training more seriously. Looking to buy Mag pouches and such for some upcoming training which will include both rifle and pistol classes. Trying to sort through all the stuff is getting tiresome so I reckon this is the place to come for help.

Ideally anything i buy would work with a normal kydex reinforced belt, something like a maxpedition liger. I do not want a riggers belt\battlebelt\chest rig etc. I don’t wear these things normally so wearing them for a class seems silly.

I would like all the pouches to be the same brand, color doesnt matter. It would also be nice if they could be stackable EX: putting a pistol mag pouch on top of a rifle mag pouch but not have them permanently attached.

From what ive seen i shouldn’t ever need more than three mags on my person at any time.

Because of my job I have access to HSGI gear. My initial thought was initially to buy the new belt mounted pouches. If no one can suggest anything better than this is what im sticking with. Though the ITW mag holder has also crossed my mind.

If it helps i’m a civilian and would like this stuff to pull double duty as my SHTF gear as well not just a training rig.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I use both the hsgi taco pouches and the itw fast mag pouches both are great options. Plus side to the tacos is they are extremely universal. I can run the same rig for my ar or my ak where you can’t do that with the fast mags. Also for the pistol tacos ypu can run a double stack or single stack mag in them. Obviously if you don’t own an ak then this is not an issue. I find that the design of the fast mags allows me to more easily reinsert magazines and you can add the pistol fast mags to a rifle one. I also find in my opinion that the fast mags have better retention than the tacos while still being able to easily draw a mag. Another down side to the fast mags is they are bulky especially if you stack them.

So I guess if you want versatility I’d go with the tacos from hsgi, if you want a designated rig then maybe the fast mags will work for you. Again I have used both civilian side and in the army and liked both I just like the flexibility of the tacos

Hope that helps

For what you’re after, the HSGI Tacos will be hard to beat, especially if they are readily available to you.
But there are other options now, the G-Code Scorpion series and the ESSTAC KYWI both do what you’re after.

I only have hands on experience with the Tacos, all positive, but if I have to redo my gear setup I plan on trying the KYWI pouches for anything stackable or Blue Force Gear’s Ten Speed offerings for slim-line gear setup.

I like the ESSTAC kiwi pistol and rifle pouches. I use them for my patrol gear, as well as my SWAT gear.

MOLLE pouches, especially when limited to a few, work fine on a quality belt. While I do not run Tacos, my guess is that is a good option. I run M4 shorties and AR10 pouches, which will even hold a wedged in AK magazines when needed.

I run classes the way I would be deploying a rifle in most cases. My daily leather belt and a back pocket. Not tacticool, but I generally run with the more outfitted dudes. War belts are great and I have those too, but prefer to train at the most basic level. You learn a lot about your limitations.

Will add that stacked mag pouches does not work well for me… They make it difficult to crawl and are a disaster inside buildings, going over fences, etc. YMMV.

I’m a little confused by your OP. You say you don’t want a belt set up but then say you want belt mounted pouches. May be I read it wrong or might be my lack of sleep, but you can get decent nylon belts that aren’t “rigger’s belts” or war belts. Ares and Volund are two brands that I have used professionally and personally. Both companies make good belts that just so happen to be great at holding kit. The Ares ranger is my everyday wear belt. I can definetly tell the difference between ashitty belt and a well made belt even when carrying just a pistol all day.

As far as pouches go you have gotten decent info so far. Personally I’m a plastic junkie, I use kydex for mag pouches. Raven for pistol pouches and RediTactical for rifle pouches. I find that they are more streamlined, more comfortable in a vehicle and allow a shirt to cover better. I have tried the FastMag pouches and found them too bulky and heavy for me. I have not personally tried the Tacos, I may one day if I build a new battle belt though. I work with a lot of guys that really dig the Tacos and they seem to work well.

If just starting out I would get a decent 1.5" double stitched nylon belt, two Taco or similar rifle pouches and a Raven double pistol pouch. Also don’t forget you may want to carry some med supplies on you.

If my post was confusing I apologize. I don’t want a battle belt or chest rig, as these are things i don’t wear daily i figure its silly to buy them only for training purposes. I do however wear a 1.5in belt every day so anything I buy has to work with that.

Thanks for the help everyone. I’m trying to avoid unnecessary gear and threads like these are very helpful, i reckon i can learn from what other people use.

I currently Ruan a battle belt setup but did run my mags On my belt for quite a while before I switched over. I’ve also run the safariland kydex ar mag pouches and really like them if I’m running mags on my regular belt they have a clip on them that makes them very easy to put on and take off without having to take my belt off. I also run the blackhawk pistol mag pouches that have the removable clip on them. That might be your best option I really love both of them and still use them if I don’t need to have my whole belt rig. Also they are very affordable. The safariland ar mag pouches are also adjustable for cant and retention as well and can be run left or right handed with is great for me being a lefty. Any of the mag pouches from safariland, hsgi, and the fast mags are available at most local shops in my area. This of course may differ for you. But then again you can also get them online and there is no lead time or long wait to get them like you have with g-code or raven or the like, not saying that the latter are nice because they are I own products from both and love them too but from an ease of access point of view the others are easier to get and a little more affordable to buy one or two to try out so you aren’t waiting a couple months to then find out you don’t like them.

Just my two cents. I’ve tried a lot of different things and that’s basically what you have to do

Seeking clarity on the bolded portions. IMO they seem to be contradictory. For the purpose of training and Everday Carry it’s better to stick with what you can carry comfortably on your person while concealing usually. Let’s face it, self defense is probably the most likely SHTF scenario out there.

If your purpose is training for the Other SHTF scenarios then it becomes grayer. May I suggest this thread: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?165321-Overt-vs-Covert-Gear-in-a-SHTF-Situation Pay particular close attention to the longer posts, especially those written by SME’s.

Assess and decide which is more important.

Take a hard look at the the HSGI tacos combined with the Raven Concealment Moduloader . Thumbs up !

Lots of different options available out there.

If you are comparing multi-mount, multi-application pouches compare the g-code scoprion pouches to others. Not saying to buy them, just saying they are worth considering.
