I’ve been running a stock Surefire Scout on my AR for over a year now. While I really liked it’s durability (previous owner used it through an OIF and OEF deployment), lightweight, and small size but it’s location was always a little awkward. Since it had a built in mount I just dealt with the location (mounted on a RAS at the 9 o’clock) that was kinda hard to activate and uncomfortable on my support hand at the low-ready.
Then I happen upon Gear Sectors SureFire Scout Light Offset Light Mount (fuck that’s a mouthful) that seemed to solve my dilemma finally. So I ordered one from SKD and like everything I’ve bought from them it arrived uber fast.
YES!!!
The box contained the aluminum mount, a baggie with 2 hex keys and 2 screws, plus some Lock-tite like substance called “Vibra-tite”.
Here’s some close-ups of the mount, “machined from billet 6061-T6 aluminum and finished per Military Specification (MIL-A-8625F) Type III, Class II Hard Coat.”
So I grabbed the small hex key to take off the factory mount only to discover it doesn’t use hex screws but the dreaded “torx” screws (instead of hexagonal shaped they’re kinda star shaped).
NOOOOOOOOO!!! I didn’t have any Torx Keys!
So I ran to the store, picked one up, and finally got the factory mount off. SUCK IT FACTORY MOUNT! Then I used the supplied screws to attach the light to the Gear Sector mount after applying some of the Vibra-tite. Piece of cake and took all of 45 seconds.
Because the GS mount has a little more clearance I was able to put a longer KAC rail cover on, leaving just enough rail to attach it.
Mount slides right on…
…and tightened down.
Viola!
Problem solved!
My support hand is much more comfortable and the light is much more convenient to reach, especially under stress. Talk about a 100% improvement. Gear Sector rocks my socks.
Great little review. I appreciate the info. I have a Gear Sector Sling Mount (You’re right, that’s a mouthful) coming in the mail tomorrow, and I can’t wait.
I just got the scout mount yesterday. mounted it this morning and it’s perfect! really help streamline the light and minimize muzzle shadow. I’ll be taking it too the range on Saturday and will see how it does there.
I’m really glad to see such a positive review. And your timing is perfect. According to SKD’s e mail update I have one in the mail and should have it in hand this week.
I was looking for something to offset the scout light due to my hand positioning and way I grip the fore end. I read a while back on Kyle Defoor’s blog that you should first learn where and how your grip and shooting positioning works best and then build the gun and it’s accessories around that. Seemed like a simple and brilliant concept to me.
Since I’m a big believer in support hand further out towards muzzle this will solve my problems of the Scout’s direct inline rail positioning.
Great review, thanks for the effort putting that together. I have been looking at these recently, and I think I am going to have to pick a couple up now.
My only concern, if anyone knows, will the light in this position interfere with the beam from a DBAL on the top rail? It looks like it would be pretty close. Thanks.
I can’t say for sure, PEQ-15’s have the illuminator “beam” on the left side and the actual “aiming” (both Vis & IR) on the right side, but I’ve never used a DBAL before. Here’s some additional pics that might help:
Based on the white light configuration shown, it’ll interfere with the illuminator of the DBAL series (or PEQ-15) if you retain it in the top-mounted position, but not the aim lasers.
Side-mounting it opposite the white light eliminates that, but that’ll likely also alter your grip, particularly in the offhand, tape switch or no.
More possibilities exist with a longer rail than that of a RAS or similar length.
