As always I tried to find an answer to my question, but was unable to find it. If a thread already exists please refer me to it.
What I’m curious about in particular is gas port erosion, and overall lifespan of two different configurations.
Has there been any tests and/or is there any documentation on exactly how much longer a 14.5" KAC carbine will last than the 11.5" KAC CQB?
I know the 11.5" CQB has a relatively smaller gas port compared to other brands while having a standard carbine length gas system. Does gas port size have any effect on the rate of gas port erosion?
Is there any estimate as to how many more rounds the 14.5" KAC system will last vs the 11.5" CQB upper? In either of the configurations will the barrel wear out before gas port erosion becomes a problem?
Assuming the rifle experiences a steady firing schedule; not shooting slowly for groups, but also not doing non-stop mag dumps. Let’s say 1000 rounds a month; no full auto, no suppressor.
What is your criteria for worn out? That can make a huge difference, depending on what exactly is intended.
What is your criteria for excess erosion? Again, that also makes a huge difference.
The ammunition used in the rifles can dramatically change the lifespan of either of those considerations, that info would be needed to be included as well. To an extent, weapons maintenance would need to be mentioned, as that may result in a change of the results.
