Has anyone tried one of these, specifically with a 1911? I just got mine in the mail today and am rather surprised. Typically Galco’s are quite tight out of the box, when I put my TRP Operator with an X300 Ultra in it while cocked it’s rather loose with almost an inch of vertical play with the thumb break snapped shut. However, drop the hammer and the thumb break fits perfectly and there is no vertical play. I’m I missing something here? It’s my first thumb break holster, is this normal? I could understand if it was a DA/SA.
Galco thumb break holsters for 1911s are designed to be carried with the hammer down as per the FAQs on their website. I think this is stupid but I don’t run that company. Why the thumb break anyway where there are other level 2 holsters that are superior to a slow thumb break style?
I’d get rid of it and go find a different retention holder that let’s you carry a cocked and locked 1911.
It kind of depends on what you want to do with it. For concealment, Raven Concealment or many of the other kydex companies will build you one for the 1911 with any light they have a world for. If you really want level 2 retention I’d take a look at the Safariland line up but I am a little partial.
Which are the only 3 options I could find. Kydex, Galco Halo, or Safariland. Safariland didn’t really blow me away and I already have plenty of Kydex. I’ll just shorten the strap on the Galco!
Since you’re partial to Safariland can you tell me why you like them so much? I’ve never owned any nor even really messed with them, I’m just going off their website.
I use their stuff at work and have been pretty happy with it for duty gear. My old man ran Safariland back in the 80s and I still use parts of his old duty gear on my belt.
