G36 Ammo

Every now and then I carry my G36. I am just curious what types of ammo people are carrying. I have some Gold Dog 200 gr. +Ps and some Winchester SXT 230 gr. hollow points. However, a lot of 1911 guys I talk to say that 230 FMJ is really the way to go. I am interested in what people think.

Go to the terminal ballistics forum and read the stickies.

CCI makes a short barrel Gold Dot,It’s what I carry in mine.

The only reason l can come up with to carry 230fmj is if nothing else will cycle reliably.

Good advice here.

Your 1911 friends are stuck in the past, but not without reason. Many 1911s should stick with hardball because it can be expected to function. You’re not afflicted with a 1911, so you have options.

I don’t remember what all is on Doc list, but a 230gr GDHP or Fed HST would be a great place to start.

Pick a hollowpoint from DocGKR’s list that you know your local shop will have in stock regularly.

Think about this:

I carry in order to be prepared.

We spend plenty of time discussing preparations to defend ourselves lawfully from a criminal.

What about defending ourselves from the criminal justice system after a lawful defensive shooting?

Assuming (God forbid) I ever have to defend myself & I survive, I know I will be facing possible legal action.

To that end, my response is: “I asked a local public safety officer what ammo they use to defend themselves and the public from dangerous criminals. Following their answer, I also chose the same defensive ammo to defend myself from criminals.”

See the point here? Just use what the police in your area use. It will play better with the prosecutor and, failing that, the jury.

Not that line again

If it was a good shoot, it isn’t going to matter what ammunition you used.

Maybe you should carry the exact same model firearm as the local PD, so that it’ll look better to the DA…

Get real…

And if they use a substandard load? What if it ends up getting you injured or worse… At least you won’t have to worry about being on trial right?

If you’re going to carry and “be prepared”, then be smart and use a load that will stop an attacker with the most effect you can manage. There is a wealth of scientific knowledge available here concerning terminal ballistics, there is a link to the FBI report regarding handgun wounding, and there are subject matter experts available to discuss things with. It would be irresponsible not to take advantage of those resources.

Could someone send me the link to where this information is. I can’t find it. Sorry

Found it

Thanks - you just helped make my point.

I made the “if” bigger for you.

It must be nice to live in a world of illusion where every self defense shooting is so clearly defined as “good” or “bad.” Some of us live in the realy world & don’t have that luxury.

For those of us in the real world, chance favors the prepared.

I believe that your point was use whatever your local law enforcement uses, so how does me mentioning the FBI report help support that? Do you think that it’s standard that every law enforcement agency in the US reads and uses ammunition in line with the FBI report or that their choices are grounded in well understood terminal ballistics? That’s about as reasonable as saying that most police departments are educated on the differences between the AR brands and they all use Colt 6920’s instead of other substandard manufacturers…

If you’d please explain your point again for me, I’d appreciate it.

There is a wealth of knowledge here on this website, along with SME’s to answer questions, and you don’t have to go with whatever your local PD carries.
