So I have a chance to pick up a brand new G17 Gen 4 for a ridiculously good price. The case envelope is dated May 2011. I read a lot of problems in a lot of threads and as far as I know this is still a risk since its before November 2011? I want a Gen 4 G17… so should I pass or do you all think it will be OK?
The problems with the 9mm Glocks are pretty touch and go.
Worst case scenario is if you have problems with it you’ll have to send it to Glock for them to fix it, or find a Glock armorer locally. It seems that Glock has fixed the problem in house, but IIRC they wont just send you the parts to fix it. Their customer service is definitely top notch, and if there is a problem they will definitely make it right.
I bought mine in July of 2011. It had a 336 ejector. The new ejector didn’t exist. One built in May will not have the 30274 ejector unless it’s already been upgraded, nor the right spring.
They’re also doing a RSA replacement project. I just did mine over the phone this afternoon and it was pretty fast and effortless. That pistol should qualify.
I have a Gen 4 G17 with a casing date of 10/2011 and it has the 024 RSA and 30274 ejector. From what I’ve read, seems like those are the most common components in recent G17’s that have had success. But then again, my buddy has a pre-Oct 2011 G17 that is running just fine with no malfunctions or brass to the face and that’s even when taking new shooters to the range.
I’ve been able to put 550 rounds through it with about 125 of that in a pistol match and no malfunctions or brass to the face or head. I notice that every so often a casing ejects a little more vertical than “normal” but not that often. I haven’t really payed that much attention to where the casings are ejecting, but I haven’t been hit by any as some have reported.
I’ve only run Remington UMC 115 gr so far and am planning on doing so until I reach 1000 and then run some Gold Dots 124 gr to test for function as that’s the load that I’d like to carry with.
