Function question?

I have a buddy who is having some problems with his Bushy carbine. He has had a trigger put in the gun recently (last year or so)and this has caused the safety to be very stiff, it takes a lot of pressure to operate it. Not sure if this has any bering on the functioning problem he’s having but thought I would mention it. It has worked for several months since he got the trigger put in. Ok on to the question. He can insert a mag and chamber a round and it will fire and feed a new round but then that second round will not fire. Pull the charging handle and chamber another round and that round will fire. I’m pretty new to ARs so I thought I would get some help from all of you. Can an AR feed a new round without resetting the hammer? What can be causing his problem

Probly due to AR15 BCG needs a true M16 carrier (they are fully shrouded on bottom to make sure hammer resets along with other reasons) what kind of trigger?

The gun has run flawlessly for him for years. The trigger was instaled fairly recently but he’s not sure what kind of trigger it is.

Do you have a known good BC to try in it?

If it was working fine before its not an equipment issue in all probability unless something broke but that should be obvious and easy to spot. Working guns dont stop working unless something breaks, parts wear out…not because the equipment was exactly faulty to begin with.

I would give it a good cleaning, change the gas rings and recoil/buffer spring, and see if that doesn’t clear it up. Worn gas rings and recoil springs can cause that type of malfunction, and they are cheap to replace. A standard spring can drop below acceptable length in 2500-3000rds, and same with gas rings. If he’s had the rifle for years, and never changed them out he should do it anyways, and go from there.

While you have the gun apart make sure the carrier key on the bolt carrier is down tight. BM tends to weakly stake the screws so its possible they have come loose, and its allowing gas to leak out causing malfunctions.

So is it possiable for an AR feed a new round without resetting the hammer? My thoughts, and it’s just a wild guess is that it is short stroking and not reseting the hammer.

If you take the upper off, and manually reset the trigger does it always lock back? If you hit the trigger with the upper off its a good idea to put a rag or something like your finger so the hammer doesnt hit the bolt catch.

The trigger could have a worn surface, and has become unreliable. What type of trigger is it?

He had it put in when he lived in Colorado, he lives here in Missouri now. He’s not sure what make it is. I have not had a chance to look at it yet.

Its entirely possible the engagement surfaces on the trigger have simply worn to the point the hammer will not reliably lock down. Its hard to say without the weapon in front of me, and limited information to work with.

Usually a short-stroking gun will reset the hammer but not chamber another round. The trigger gets reset before BCG goes back far enough to pick another round up. Since it sounds like its picking rounds up short stroking is not likely.

What type of ammo is he using? Could be a batch of hard primers or some type of ammo failure, too. When it doesn’t fire the trigger is not working at all as in the hammer is up in the fired position and was never reset?

It could be a number of things, and again hard to say without the weapon in front of me. Id also check and replace the firing pin if the trigger appears to be working normally.

What happens when the trigger is pulled when the problem occurs during live-fire?
Click, or dead trigger?

A few things.

  1. Installing and removing a trigger is easy. I would put the original back in place and see what happens.

  2. I would make an effort to ascertain what trigger was installed.

  3. It is possible to chamber another round and have the hammer in a forward position. I had this exact same thing happen to some BM carbines in Iraq. The best conclusion I could make was that I was experiencing bolt bounce. I swapped every single part in the lower, the gas tube and the gas rings. Once I changed the barrel everything was 100%.

Not saying that this will solve the problem, but I would start by putting in the old trigger and going from there.
