Hi everyone. I don’t know anything about full auto parts so that’s why I’m doing this post. Is it legal in any way to make your AR full auto? I have heard of drop in auto sears but was unsure of whether or not something like that would even be legal. Also, what other parts or specifications do you need to put in your AR?

Short answer is no. It was not registered as a machine gun prior to May 1986 it is illegal to convert to a machine gun. Now there are drop-in auto Sears that are registered as a machine gun that you may purchase but expect to pay out the nose.

Here is one example I found on gunbroker, there are multiple auctions starting around $17k and more. Most sell closer to $25-$30k. An m16 is a couple grand less.

You can purchase them, you just can’t legally install them. Some say even having m16 parts and a AR15 lower will get you in trouble under the Intent to manufacture an illegal machine gun.
The only legal way you can covert your rifle is buying a RDIAS.
The part circled in red is the auto sear. The auto sear is pinned in the third pin hole above the selector in an M16.
There’s no such hole in an AR15, because if there was, it would be a machine gun and legally no different from an M16.
The hammer, disconnector, selector and trigger on an M16 are also slightly different from the equivalent parts on an AR15, but the ATF considers the auto sear hole to be the defining “part” that’s the legal distinction between a semi-auto lower receiver from a machine gun lower receiver, so nothing but the lower receiver-with-a-third-pin-hole is legally restricted. A drop-in auto-sear (unlike the M16 auto sear circled above) can fit in an unmodified AR15 lower, so the DIAS itself is legally the machine gun. Since the M16 lower parts kit you linked is not legally restricted, there’s no legal restriction on making more. The only restriction is economic, supply and demand. There is a legal restriction on making more machine guns which may be transferred to the general public, 18 USC 922(o), so supply is all out of whack, making the price go up.

In some states, you cannot even own full auto parts… Even if you do not own any other firearm, let alone one that they fit in…
OP – best way to get into a select fire AR platform is to buy a registered lower or complete rifle. Gunbroker is a good place to start or at least familiarize yourself with the market. Select fire is going to add roughly $18K-20K to your AR build. Resale / investment will be best with a factory Colt M16A1. IMHO I think it would be awesome but not worth the financial pain in 2015.
Am I just slightly stupid, or do I remember RDIASs going for more like $6,000-7,000 just a few years ago? $30,000 is… I don’t have words for that, actually.

In the Wisconsin case, the parts did not matter. It was the fact that the ATF could get the weapon to fire in full auto that got that imbecile convicted. And he got nailed for an illegal transfer.
Wow RDIAS up to 30k? I think I can forget about ever owning one in my life time, what a shame.
My local gun store has a very nice Colt M16A1 in on consignment right now for $29k. I want it.
You can get an M16A1 from Ruben for $5K less right now.

hope this is not highjacking the thread. is there such a thing as a transferable sear or trigger pack for a pre ban steyr aug or is the rifle lower the numbered part. really looks like this stuff is well above the average joes pay grade.
