FSP Rail: M4, Lite, OmegaX

Just want to hear comments from those who have a Lite and M4 in comparison to the Omega X.

Width, feel, security of mounting, ruggedness, etc. I realize that the M4 is “old school”, but still is out there. I know the Omega X has small set screws, but how is the M4 in terms of ruggedness? Is Al barrel nut durable?

Thanks.

I just installed the M4 12.0 FSP on a Colt 6920 the other day. After installing it, I’d think that you would really, really have to beat the crap out of the rail to even begin to consider damaging the barrel nut.

The only reason I didn’t go with the LITE FSP is because I prefer the slightly smaller profile of the M4 rail.

Here’s a couple pics of the rail installed. You can see in the first picture that the lock ring isn’t too large. It is slightly bigger than the lock ring that LaRue uses.

How is the lock up - likely as strong as the Lite? I know the Omega X has small set screws. I know that I won’t mount optics on the rail, but still would like it to be as rugged as possible and the Lite is pricey.

The rail to receiver lock up is pretty damn tight (the Lite most likely holds an advantage with the steel barrel nut and 6 fasteners that hold the rail to the receiver). There are also two alignment pins that go into the barrel nut to prevent rotation of the rail. It took me about an hour or so to install the rail. It was my first time performing “major surgery” to one of my ARs, but I had the proper tools, so it was relatively easy to do. The hardest part was pounding the front sight pins out, then lining everything back up, through the rail.

Did you consider the omega X?

Didn’t you just post this question?

I have an Omega X FSP and it is PLENTY solid. I may have gone for the “Lite” but based on the reputation of the Omega X I didn’t think it was worth $150 more (Midway still has them for $200 plus the frequent 10% off)

I believe they are the thinnest DD rails as well. The QD slot is nice as well. I was worried about the set screws when i saw them but rail is SUPER solid.

I would post some close up pics but I’m having issues right now.

Roger - the Omega X has ALL the best features, but someone who knows way more than I (and I’ll not tell on him) told me they can have a problem with the set screws stripping, and they flex more. I don’t care about flexing, as I don’t plan to use an optic/laser on the rail. I have NOT found any issues on the www with the Omega X, and I just ask to confirm/deny, AND compare/contrast with what could be more sturdy rail lockups. Cost wise, it is easily in the Omega X court, but you can get the M4 at a reasonable price - may be an alternative to the light, and it is slimmer also.

I dont think you could get anymore solid than the lite rail. I didnt really need a rail, but with the smartgunner deal it was basically free. I now have a DD lw upper with lite rail, that can shoot the balls off a fly. If i had to do it without the deal, i would just get an MOE.

If you buy a rifle WITH a DD Omega X Rail on it, can’t you just take it off and put your Omega X rail on it? ( without any mods - same barrel nut, etc.)

If you go to Daniel Defense’s website, you can watch the torture test video.
In the video the Omega X gets pretty abused.
It holds up well.

Nope, just the LITE and the M4. All of the DD rails are excellent products. It is money very well spent, even though the initial outlay is expensive.

I don’t know if you’re shopping at Daniel Defense’s website or not, but check out Brownells.com if you haven’t already. They have the 12" Lite FSP for $356, instead of the $389 Daniel Defense is charging.
