Can anyone please link me to a tutorial, preferably with pictures, of how to remove a mil-spec FSB??? I tried the search engine but quite unsuccessfully…Would it be easier to shave the FSB?? I’d like to get a 12" rail for my Middy, and would prefer to go the removal-and-buy-a-gas-block route…Thanks…![]()
here is a brownells video I found on youtube. Should give you an idea of what you need to do

I would take it off and shave it, the best FSB out there is a pinned one
Is it reasonable to leave the FSB on the barrel and shave it, carefully??
i have heard some people do it, but I have done two and never would have been able to do it, the fsb is easy to take off so it wasnt a problem for me as I have all the tools.
Can you/ do you reuse the pins?? How about the gas tube pin?? Do you remove it before/after the two main pins??
Yes, you can reuse the taper pins, although they may need to be shortened via grinding – depending on much the FSB needed to be shaved.
The gas tube pin is a roll pin, so best practice is to replace it with a new one.
I remove the gas tube pin at the same time. It just makes it easier when removing the FSB, and reduces the risk of bending the gas tube.
A Brownells FSB block makes things easier.
Thanks for the input guys
gotm4 has done a FSB while still on the barrel. He put an Omega 12.0 on a pinned 14.x for a customer a while back. Turned out really nice too but it was a lot of shaving.

Here’s a separate thread on shaved FSB’s.
