I have always been told a frozen system will not work. So how did this one. As you can tell it was not cycyled to break the action free nor was it dethawed. I am just wondering how this works.
It worked because there’s already a round in the chamber and apparently the fire control group was not frozen solid. An impinged gas system would most likely have performed the same under those conditions.
I’m going to go ahead and say that a few cap culls of water is not enough to build a substantial amount if ice on the bolt. If you see the “packed” snow covered up any ice if it formed.
Why would it not work? Barring that the trigger, disconnector or hammer hasn’t frozen, and the weapon is loaded, the force generated from 50-55k psi of pressure can overcome quite a bit of resistance.
Although there are degrees of frozen, of course. It might simply be a case of not frozen enough.
C’mon, boys & girls, critical thinking time. Just because water was poured over the rifle and snow packed around it doesn’t mean it’s going to freeze in an hour. Even so, as Arctic1 points out, there’s varying degrees of frozen
Providing the temps were cold enough (below freezing), I would have taken said rifle that has been allowed to obtain ambient temps, dipped in 33* water, then dropped back in the snow to sit overnight - see what happens in the morning.
I don’t know the history of that particular rifle other than he states that he has not cleaned it, but there has to be some semblance of oil or lubrication in there, which would repel water from the metal. Yes, I know oil is lighter than oil…it still bonds to the surface to some extent.
Fair test? Maybe.
Another would be to do a mag dump, toss it into a snow bank to sit over night and try again the next day.
With the bolt closed, NO WATER got into the system. It’s watertight (think about it, it’s airtight too). The water rolled right off the metal and there WAS NO ICE on the rifle!
So what, there was just a bit of snow on the outside, for appearance.
He shot an AR that was outside in 20 degree temps for an hour. OOOO! Don’t fall for the hype.
If I didn’t live in Florida, I could do that with my Colt, my Marlin 336 or my Browning BAR. Heck, I’ve shot my Nylon 66 in colder climes than that.
Yea that wasn’t a very thorough test… he basically let ice form on the outside of the bolt. The notches cut in the side of the bolt carrier are designed to allow the BC to shed ice that has formed on the outside of the bolt. The problem with freezing is really when temps are cold enough to freeze your lubricating oil or to cause it to become more viscous… this impedes function.
Those “notches” are not for ice; they’re what the forward assist contacts when pushed forward.
ETA: The purpose of the video was to see how it performs in “arctic conditions”? “Arctic conditions” are not 32* F or even 0* F. -50* F would be a good starting point.
Seriously. This kind of superficial testing is good for nothing, not even “hey that’s neat.”
My understanding of actual Army cold weather tests is when they send the stuff to the CRTC at Ft. Greely, the equipment stays at temperature for days if not substantially longer. I also know for a fact they have test chambers that can artificially enduce large temp swings from far about 100 degrees to far below zero.
Dumping your rifle in the snow for even a couple hours is a joke…
