Front sight BURIED to zero it...

Hey guys and gals.
First post here, so bear with me.

Recently put an AR together with a Colt 6920 upper, on an Anvil Arms Lower. I used the Bushmaster carry handle from another AR I have.

The problem is, I went to sight the rifle in this weekend - open sights, 6 o clock hold at about 50 yards and had to bury the front sight to get it to zero.

The front sight is the Colt sight, the front sight post is marked G4 I1.

The carry handle is off a 16" bushmaster, so there shouldnt be any difference, correct?

Any ideas?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Bushmaster (among others) carry handles are slightly shorter than milspec height because Bushy is too lazy to put proper FSBs on their rifles.

Edit: To clarify, Bushmaster uses A2-height FSBs on all their rifles; however, due to the shorter sight radius of a carbine-length weapon, the design requires a slightly higher FSB (generally designated by an “F” stamped on the FSB). Since Bushmaster doesn’t use F-marked FSBs, they compensate by making their rear sight slightly shorter. Since the Colt has the correct FSB, the post has to be lowered significantly more than normal to zero with the out-of-spec Bushmaster carry handle.

Yes. The Colt should have a proper “F” height FSB, and the Bushmaster carry handle isn’t proper spec height because Bushy doesn’t use F height FSBs.

I’d look for a Colt or BCM carry handle.

Or an LMT or Larue rear BUIS.

ah HA!
So the solution is to grab a mil spec carry handle somewhere??

Exactly. Colt (If you can find one) or Bravo Company Machine carry handles are both quality, milspec-height sights. If you like the idea of getting a functional rear sight that will also work as a BUIS if you ever get an optic, LMT makes a “chopped carry handle” type sight - essentially a carry handle sight without the carry handle part.

Now THAT’S interesting… have to look into those.

Thanks for all the help!

I’ve really got to recommend the LMT BUIS. It’s as solid as a rock, leaves plenty of room for an Aimpoint (or Eotech if you’re one of those misguided souls), and looks great.

Uh, can’t he just get a shorter front sight post?

Wouldn’t that be about 90% cheaper than a new BUIS?

Ben

well then he’s limited in rear sights in the future, plus that requires a degree of dissassembly/reassembly some peoples are not all that comfortable with. “f” marked is the way of the Buddha.

That’s like letting the air out of your other three tires when you have a flat so that they are all the same.

lol

Exactly! I never buy onto this different sight post rubbish to compensate for aftermarket trinkets.

FYI - BCM’s carry handle worked perfectly for me on my Sabre upper with F front sight tower.
