Front hand guard retainer

Not sure of its official title, but I’ve noticed a lot of guys have taken it off. I got to thinking about it when considering the Danger Close mount on a 7" Omega.

Does anybody have this set up? Will it block the mount with a G2? Is there an easier way to take the “hand guard holder” off than it seems, or do I have to remove the FH and FSB…

You at least have to loosen up the FSB, slide it forward, and you’d be able to cut the handguard cap off.

Thanks. Is there a benefit to removing it, or is it just for aesthetics? I assume it is necessary in order to add a longer rail, but the 7" omega works with it still on.

i would leave it with a stock fsb, as it spaces it out so the gas hole in the barrel lines up with the hole in the fsb. the hole on the fsb is larger, so it might still line up with the handguard cap removed.

You only need the handguard cap if you have a rail or stock plastic handguards that need it.

If you are installing a FF rail (like the omega) you can remove it, and it will allow a little better airflow over the barrel.

If you do remove it there will be a slight gap between the shoulder on the barrel, and the back of the FSB. Since the FSB is already installed you can just tap the pins out, slide it forward, and then cut off the handguard cap. When you reinstall the pins the FSB will line back up correctly as the pins force the FSB back into position.

Great explanation. Thanks Belmont.
