From one of the good guys in Hollywood

David Spade donated $100,000.00 to his hometown, Phoenix, Arizona, for the Police Department in order to buy AR-15 for their officers. The Police Department did not have enough money in their budget to supply every officer with a AR-15 so David Spade donated the money to insure every officer is given the equiptment they need. He is one of the good guys in Hollywood.

Good for him. but just because he thinks the police should have them doesn’t mean he supports your right to them.

That is true but he does not write any laws or bills. He might even be putting his neck on the line in Hollywood for using his money to buy “evil” guns even if they are for the Phoenix P.D.

Wow. Good for him. This is a very nice gesture.

Maybe he is also hoping this could be his get out jail free card when he’s pulled over with hookers and blow in his Ferrari. Sorry:( I guess I am always looking for the evil in people and I tend to be very skeptical. I have no grounds upon which to base any of my comments.

It’s horrible that someone does something this great for their local PD and I come out with internet blab like a complete idiot.

Tax deduction???

I think it is great he was willing to help the Officer’s out.

Good for him, if they are going to carry rifles, it should not have to be their own cash going to it. When one of the occupational hazards of your job is incoming fire, I think a rifle is warranted.

This should minimize all those pot arrests.

Maybe they shouldn’t of sold there aug’s back in 94 to civilians!

The article said he made the donation to the “Phoenix Police Foundation,” but I couldn’t find it via Google. Nonetheless, assuming arguendo that it is tax deductible, that means he’ll pay about $30k less taxes this year … still works out to a $70,000 loss if I remember second grade math properly.

How’s about this quote from the article though:

The AR-15 rifles the department is seeking cost over $2,000 each; Spade’s gift will allow the purchase of more than 40 of the guns.

I know what the .gov price is on a 6921 … what exactly are they buying for $2,000???

Dang inflated gun show prices!

Its nice to see that there are still a few good guys left in Hollywood.

My best friend who works for Ft. Worth, Tx. PD had to buy his own rifle (I believe they could only use RRA or Colt). And then the rules and everything else involved to carry it made it too much trouble, in his opinion.
Good for the Phoenix PD. As long as they are on the right side.

                                                       dog

You have to factor in accessories, such as mags, slings, an aimpoint or eotech, and possibly minimal training as well. So it may cost them $2000 per officer for each weapon.

Rider – If they were including training in that number, no argument whatsoever.

But at gov prices, the rifle plus mags plus light plus optic (assuming they’re putting both an optic and a light on every single gun, which is a big assumption) still wouldn’t be near two grand.

Maybe they’re including cleaning kits and supplies, mags, sling, case, and most of all…AMMO in that $2K+ price? With the new rifle comes a new caliber of ammunition to keep the hungry things fed. And I can probably be safe in assuming they aren’t shooting Wolf.

Todd,

I agree that they could get more than 50 rifles of good quality with that money. If you go to www.azplea.com you can see the story. David Spade grew up in the area and still has family there. Personally I think it was a great gesture considering that we have so many oxygen thieves in Hollywood.

When my department figures pricing, its a total package price. Its not just the weapon, its everything else that goes into it to field the front line troop. That can include training (cost of bringing an outside trainer in, and cost of LEO off the street), additional equipment (weapon locks for cruisers), ammunition, optics, extra magazines, etc etc…

When you start looking at numbers, its hard to figure exactly what they are getting simply off one figure. I would agree, 2k would be obscene for an agency price per individual weapon.

Sometimes motives don’t matter. This is one of those times.

Assume Mr. Spade made the donation for the sole reason of looking good, getting away with petty drug abuse and speeding, maybe a B&E or some crap.

We have one guy getting away with things that probably won’t endanger anyone but himself and he gets to preen. In a “worst case” scenario.

We also have 40 officers or more that are equiped with the best equipment they can procure and are thus better able to protect themselves and others from “real” badguys.

I simply think he should get a huge +1.

PS. As far as the weapons cost, my A4 clone has no “special” parts and cost very close to $4K. I can’t see the police beating that price by half considering the price adjustments given to me by all my sources for the rifle/components.

Maybe I should look at getting a job in Hollywood as an “armorer to the stars”?

That’s a great idea.
