Frist AR-15, point me in right direction

I’ve gotten into shooting recently and been bitten by a bug to build an AR15. I’m pretty sure I want to build an m4gery style rifle by putting together an complete upper an a complete lower, however I have no idea what to get. I orginally was thinking a stag lower and upper, especially since thats my price range (750-800ish), but I’m not so sure anymore and was wondering if there were better options.

I plan to use my rifle for 3 gun matches/plinking and I plan to shoot mostly 55 grain ammo. I know I want a chrome barrel and I am confused as to if I should get m4 feedramps or not. I’m not totally opposed to buying a kit and stripped lower, but I don’t have access to the tools needed to build. If you can’t already tell I’m new to shooting, so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to M4C.

Normally I would not be this abrupt, but I must ask:

Have you read any of the threads in the AR General and Technical forums yet?

ya, I’ve been looking through alot of threads on this and other websites, problem is there are some many options its confusing to someone whose fairly new to the sport. Just looking for someone with some experience to start me in the right direction.

Well, can you deviate from the sub $800 range? What type of sighting will you use in your 3-gun division?

I guess I will have to deviate from the sub 800 range. As for sighting for now I plan on using iron sights, and buying some sort of optic later. Thanks.

Sounds like you would be in the market for a good “used” Rock river or Bushmaster… Try to go with an A4 style top so you can add on later.

I’ve definetly been looking for used, and I’ll keep searching. Thanks for the tip.

Quick question though, CMMG uppers, any good? Saw some with the features Im looking for. So far I havent heard anthing bad about their newer stuff, but their older stuff wasn’t so great is what I’ve found.

What division are you shooting in? This will change the type of build you need greatly.

Assembled Frankenguns are notoriously unreliable. As suggested a good used gun would probably fit your bill best. Rob S. has an excellent chart on AR’s and their parts makeup. Knowing what I know now I would save a bit more and get exactly what I wanted the first time. Good Luck.

Even if its just an upper half and lower half put together?
