Frangible ammo FTF - luckily no KB

I was at an indoor range which only allows frangible .223, which, of course, you have to buy from them.

The ammo was American Ammunition http://www.a-merc.com/

Made in Miami. Yeah, the Miami down here, believe it or not!

Anyway, I bought 100 rds of this stuff, loaded it into 3 30rd and 1 20 rd mags, which have functioned flawlessly in the past. I was shooting a Colt 6933 with a low round count (less than 500) which has never malfunctioned before with regular factory ammo.

At about 80 rounds, I had a FTF, and while clearing it, noticed that the offending “case” was heavy. Turned out it was the unfired round with a piece of the frangible bullet still inside. When I was getting ready to inspect the bore (and following safe procedures), I tilted the rifle up (pointed downrange) and out came the rest of the unfired bullet, which was not lodged in the chamber or barrel but was lodged in enough that it could not be seen just by eyeballing the chamber from the side at a slight angle.

  • At no time did I intend to fire the rifle without inspecting the bore/barrel for obstructions, especially after reading about a recent KB on here, and the range was empty except for myself and my shooting buddy in a different lane.

I shot the remaining rounds I had uneventfully (yeah, I know, I went from bad judgment to downright stupidity doing this), called it a day with that rifle, and will never use this stuff again. BTW, it wasn’t cheap at about 30 bucks/50rds.

Needless to say, my Sunday could have been a lot worse.

Any thoughts? Anyone ever use this stuff?

I just figured I’d rather be safe and post this as a heads-up if anything. Mods, if this belongs on another discussion folder, my apologies.

Thanks

PS - yeah, I know, probably serves me right for buying this stuff in the first place.

Next time, go with this stuff:

Notice the copper jacket will prevent this sort of failure.
