Found this odd thing at the LGS...

Yesterday, I was working at my friends gun shop and they were having a huge tent sale of military surplus gear. Among the items I found this curious looking item. It appears to be a clam shell guard for an M4 carbine that had an Aimpoint, vertical grip and a laser device (likely an AN/PEQ-2A or similar)on the top of the handguard. There’s no markings at all and it looks rather well made by someone who’s had a lot of experience doing carbon fiber and fiber glass molding. I’d almost guess that it might have been manufactured by a company but, as I said, there’s no markings.

Any ideas? Anyone ever see something like this?

ETA: Sorry to the mods for posting in the wrong section.

I looks custom made to me. The rear part looks like it might fit an Eotech RDS. No idea on manufacturer.

I thought Eotech at first too, but looking at the left hand side, there’s a bump that looks like it’s for the Aimpoint mount’s knob.

The opening on the right side, is that for the controls on the Eotech?

The opening in the right side is for the ejection port.

put a gun in it.

Something that unique, I’d pick it up for myself. If you don’t keep it for yourself, I’d be interested in it. Send me a PM.

It looks like something that someone would use for exposed weapon jumping.

ETA: Look familiar?

Will, thank you!

What is the purpose of it. Can get to the trigger but can’t operate the safety or optics?

To protect your weapon while jumping (landing) and have the ability to point shoot until you have pulled the quick release, as for the safety manipulation, the one halo2304 picked up seems to have addressed this issue.

A better mousetrap over padding/taping or (god forbid) placing your weapon in a 1950’s weapons case.

I thought it was a leg brace, lol.

It certianly does look like some sort of prostetic device or something.

It looks like the one I found was either modified or the one pictured in the link is a prototype because the one I found doesn’t appear to cover the charging handle. It’s likely that the soldier jumps with the M4’s safety off but the chamber empty so they land, rack and shoot if needed.
