form 1 q

ok, i have a question about the engraveing you guys are talking about.
ive read and reread chapter 6.2.1 in the nfa handbook, it states that if there is already a serial number and manufacture on the reciever from the factory, then that is the number and name you should use on the form 1.

am im missing something, where does it say i must engrave a new number?

I’m replying under the assumption that you’re F1ing a lower for purposes of Short barreled enjoyment.

There is a line 4 h on the form. You don’t need to put a new serial number. If you choose to put additional markings such as Your name or the name of your Trust and the city and state, you would put that info on that line.

I left it blank so I wouldn’t have to engrave. Some people disagree with this though. I’ve done 2 lowers this way, and another guy here has done like 5 or 6 sbrs this way.

If you were to make a lower from some 80% forging or something, then you’d need to assign a serial number. But since your gun will already have a serial number, nothing further is needed.

ok thanks, thats what i wanted to hear, form 1 goes in the mail tomorrow.
lmt 10.5 upper, lmt lower, bcm auto bcg, cant wait.

demi,

I just want to get a clarification. Are you saying that you went the trust route and did not engrave the trust info on those NFA items and everything went good? Just want to make sure so when I do mine I do not have to worry about that. One could assume that if it was an issue BATFE would have flagged it?

That’s EXACTLY correct. I know some people get nutty when I post this and think that the end of the world is near. Most people won’t post that they’ve done this because they just don’t want to draw out the irrational responses. I’m just giving the facts of my SBRs without the emotion. There could be examiners who interpret this differently. But I’ve never heard/read of an F1 getting bounced for no info in line 4h.

(You’ll likely get IMs saying I’m crazy, don’t do it, Club fed, bubba, 10 years, etc.)

Sounds good. Do the BATFE regulations specifically state that a Trust type registered weapon indeed have to be marked as such? Where does one find the exact wording of the regulations?

I’m not sure that the Trust makes any difference over an individual application as far as markings are concerned. There’s people who mark their lowers with individual info AND trust info all the time. (is that what you’re asking?)

I can show you all my stuff some time… You can decide what you want to do then. I’m only offering the facts of my case… not telling anyone what they should do!

Post #12 in this thread seems to be a sensible explaination of marking requirements.

Demi,

I understand what you are saying. It was my understanding that when you did the paperwork as a Trust there are requirements for marking that item with the trust name, etc…etc…In my case I will only be looking at an SBR (shorty is already manufactured) and a suppressor (again off the shelf) and if your stuff was approved the way you describe it and it appears to be legit then I will try that route as well. Having read post 12 I must have missed something in relation to the markings?

If you mean that you’re buying an existing SBR like a Colt 6933, then you definitely don’t need to worry about markings on anything. Just like a silencer… It is just an asset of the Trust… no additional markings are required.

Not to beat a dead horse. But, if I bought an SBR upper and then dropped it onto XYZ lower would that remain true? Or by doing that have I just manufactured an SBR and then changed the equation? But, hey I’ll worry about it when I get home first and then see what happens.

Doing that as opposed to buying a Colt 6933 (for example) would mean a form 1 instead of a form 4.

My SBRs are Form 1s. Short Bbl uppers on XYZ lowers. I’ll let you look over my nonsense when you are available.

Demi,

Roger that. I am clear on the Form 1/ 4 parts. I look forward to checking it out when I get back. So many projects and so little time…
