Finally there when they were open/didn’t have to be somewhere else.

Burgers and fries were good for anyone that likes gas station/truck stop grill type food. Banana pudding was awesome. Gonna have to get down that way in winter and see if they fire up the pot belly stove.

It is like going back in time and very cool to see something still in operation that would normally only be seen as a museum display.

Do heed the curve warning recommended speeds on 127 between York’s place and the store especially if raining, they were not exaggerating.

Also our first trip in to York’s grist mill which was neat to look around inside and outside. Apparently the person that normally opens it up was not their so a ranger unlocked it for us and another family and let us wander around so not sure how our experience differed from the normal.

Something that we had been to that was a little different this time was York’s house. We went through it about 10 years ago(sticking a video on someone di. d around that time) when it was self guided. In all honesty, the getting to more or less wander around was fun, but the fellow that guided the tour had a lot of interesting info about the Yorks and the house such as pointing out a cleaning accident bullet hole in the interior door that was stopped by the inside of the front door. Tickets are picked up on the other side of the road now with tour times scheduled through the day.

The Sgt. York anti aircraft tank that was there on our last trip was gone and a replica trench has been put in which we skipped due to the storm going on during our visit.

From what the guide told us, this video is closer to what the house looked like by the time the Yorks stopped living there and TN parks are doing some restoration work to make some areas(such the kitchen) look more like when they first moved in. The avocado green stove is no longer there and has been replaced by a wood burner similar to the rusted out original that was stored in one of the sheds.

We drove there a few years ago, it’s about 2 hours from where I live. We enjoyed it and had a family picnic down by the river along with visiting the general store and York’s house. The grist mill was open and we went up all the way to the top. We love historical sites and visit them whenever we can.
