Guys…DPH Arms / Scott has it listed on his site now!!! Wooo hooo!!! Awaiting some details from him but it’s listed at $69.95.
Some of my questions are which stocks it will work with? It attaches by removing the rear sight leaf and then also attaching it to the rear buttstock screw. I’m guessing this rules out the ACE internal receiver block. Also I’m not sure how you use the irons. I’ve posted these questions on AKForum and ARFCOM awaiting answers but I’m so happy about this right now I just had to post it!
I was going to say- that smells of 100% Polish Mil-spec right there. And no, I’m not trying to be funny. I remember seeing Templars Polish pics a long time ago and thinking that was a neat idea.
A screw is a no-no for back there.
No, you wouldn’t be using any irons with that rail installed. That rail is OBVIOUSLY so you could use an optic. Whether it’s smart to not have a BUIS is another debate but obviousy this wasn’t meant to replace or allow the use of a rear optic.
They should make it 100% correct so that you HAVE to use the original style folder and not ACE garbage.
I think through trial and error we figured out the optimal fighting AK layout and it don’t involve a non-spec rail that prevents you from removing the dustcover and eliminates the rear iron sight.
Nothing at all. They work well. But they are not of the look or design of the traditional AK, so it bothers some.
I think this DPH rail is well suited for the hobbyist AK shooter, and not much more than that, due to the screw on attachment, and lack of rear sight.
Although the Krebs new rail is likely to cost 5x as much as the DPH rail, it is a much more practical design. Maybe not for everyone, but very practical for those who desire such a set-up.
I always see the Ace stocks on guns where it’s a new owner and they just have to fiddle with something and that’s a cheaper way for them to “customize” the gun. They look cheaper to me too. I don’t understand them on ARs but they obvoiusly have their place in the AK world since the folders look very much like some countries’ standard sidefolders.
It’s not a traditionalist versus nontraditionalist look at the AK so much as it is a look into what you are really gaining by doing certain things. Hell, a $5 gizmo on an AK might be neat. A $15 rail piece and $26 G2 flashlight with tapeswitch is just perfect. BUT trying to come up with all sorts of rather expensive ways just to mount some other goofy gear is just a waste of time and energy.
I look at it the same way as some of the kids who get the hand me down car and then rice it all out with rims, mufflers, decals, etc. instead of trading it in on something that is more appropriate for those sorts of embellishments.
I had the funny feeling it would end up in this configuration but that’s understandable. How else could it be mounted without major modifications to the rifle? As long as it holds zero relatively well removing one screw for cleaning the weapon does not bother me. I would prefer to see compatibility with the rifles iron sights, but I really don’t see how they could have mounted it any other way.
Have you seen the Krebs new rail? I just talked to Brian from Krebs yesterday, and he said it should be available by the end of April,
and they will have pics up on their site next week. Im sure it costs 5x as much as the DPH rail, but…[/b]
I’m talking about ridiculous shit that doesn’t work so well. This seems to be one of those things that you’ll end up chewing up with a screwdriver trying to get off to clean. At that point, what good will it be?
My philosophy is…there is nothing wrong w/ “tactical” as long as it’s “practical”
Granted what one person has may not benefit me but as long as it truly works for them then so be it. I’d like to have the Kreb’s rail just for the fact of the longer sight distance but I’m not gonna pay an assload as I imagine would have to be done to own this rail.
Have you handled one? Been within ten miles of it?
Why would you “Chew it up with a screwdriver”?
I’m not saying it’s perfect but it looks to me like DPH did a good job. They kept it simple, drop-in, and relatively cheap. Time will tell if it holds zero and can take some abuse.
It might not be perfect but lets give it a chance. It looks like a damn good start to me. They just need to add a rear sight to the rail like the Krebs.
Somebody needs to buy one and try it out BEFORE they start bashing it - This is one of the golden rules of M4carbine.net
