But it wasn’t Tony who got whacked, it was the viewer. David Chase cuts to black because he whacked the viewing audience. In a prior episode Tony and Bobby were talking about the subject and Bobby commented that you probably never even see or hear it coming.
Chase distracted us with his dramatic “going nowhere” buildup and we got whacked when we least expected it. Chase thought it was incredibly clever, it was one of the worst endings to a show that started out great then started getting gay (figuratively and literally) and decided to go out on a gimmick.
Yeah, I’m not buying that video. It is the viewer that gets cut off. also if you follow that guys logic, had the members only guy come out of the bathroom then as Tony looked up his peripheral vision would have caught him. Also the kid was looking up eating the onion rings, when Tony looked to his right, the kid would have looked to his left so both would have seen the guy. The POV at the time it went black was us, not Tony. If Tony had been shot we would have seen it. The only thing that would cause immediate blackness and loos of everything is if we are gone, not Tony.
I’m leaning toward the explanation in the video. It did seem as the view of people coming in the front door & the guy going to the bathroom was the view through Tony’s eyes. The viewers getting cut off doesn’t make sense to me. But I guess that’s the idea behind the way it was written. It can be interpreted in many ways. Sopranos is my favorite series of all time. I watched it twice this year. Nothing I’ve seen since compares.
