For my ONE RIFLE, is the MRP worth the extra expense over a 6920?

I have one and compared to my other AR’s, it’s effin heavy. The ability to replace barrels on a steady platform is unique, but it’s not all that appealing to me personally. I converted it to 6.8 with the intent to use it as a hunting rifle. Go with a 6920, or BCM/DD middy with a DD Rail.

You guys are gonna kill me.
Sorry to have wasted your time.

I just remembered I have a 200$ credit at knesek guns which means I can get a colt 6720 for 879$ shipped.

I don’t think the MRP can compete with taht for value.

The only platforms that come close are:

-770$ from AIM for a complete spikes midlength ST-15 LE

-800$ BCM upper and lower from grant for about that (I have a quality b/bc/ch already)

Spikes, AIM and BCM and grant are all on my good list, but the colt 6720 is nearly perfect and for 880$ shipped?

As was said earlier, it just depends on what you want.

Personally I got over the quick change barrel idea after using a SCAR heavy. Changing a barrel then rezeroing the optic, irons, and LA-5 was such a pain in the ass that I ended up never doing it. I just used the mid length barrel all the time. A much better option is to have a discreet upper for each barrel length/caliber you want to use. That way if you want to change your barrel/caliber you can have your optic already zeroed and ready to go. That’s truly quick change. I would get a nice standard DI AR and put the money you saved toward an Aimpoint, Surefire, sling, ammo, and training. That 6720 for $879 is a no-brainer.

If I was starting over, I’d just buy the Colt, a BCM, or maybe a DD. I wouldn’t buy Spikes based on my own personal experience. After playing around with this config/that gizmo/etc for a few years I’m realizing that a simple carbine is the way to go for me. The only negative with the Colt, for me, is I can’t get a midlength gas system. That’s why I’ve bought BCM and DD barrels for 16" guns: I like the FSB with MOE handguards, but the FSB in carbine position is too short for me with my long arms.

This. MRP is cool, but IMO I would only buy if I wanted to swap barrels.

Not sure why people keep calling the MRPs heavy - the difference isn’t really that much.

I had my 16" barrel reprofiled to match the SR-15 barrel and my complete MRP (CQB) upper weighs less then my MUR + 13" Vtac rail + 14.5" Centurion Arms Barrel… its also within ounces of a SR-15 upper.

I don’t use the quick barrel change but I find the upper chassis to be the best in the game.

Hey CJ

It all depends…

For me I would rather have a 16" BCM light wt middie with a light
wt forend (Troy Xtreme or equivilant) and a 12.5 Noveske Rogue Hunter
in 6.8 SPC with the same forend in a Mega upper…

Probably make sure the threads are true and get a supressor ready muzzle device…I kinda like the AAC Blackouts so thats what I got.

For lowers forged Mega with Geissele triggers (S2S are nice)
LMT Sopmod with Magpul MOE+ grip (K grip is nice too)
oh and Battle Comp levers

I do want another Benelli shotgun someday

I like my stuff as light as possible given my desire for accoutrements

As a fellow “behind the liner”, first let me say that I’m envious. I will be moving out of the Democratic People’s Republic as soon as I possibly can.

On the subject/question before the house, I have 2 MRPs - one a complete LMT MRP rifle in ban-compliant configuration (PWS 556 brake, pinned VLTOR stock), and one LMT MRP upper on a pre-ban lower (A2 birdcage, full function VLTOR stock). I love them both, but I really hate the concussion and obnoxiousness of the brake. Surprise, surprise - the pre-ban is getting all of the range time…

[FWIW, I do think the MRP, particularly in Rifle length (as opposed to CQB), is “much” heavier than “many” other railed uppers, speaking unscientifically.]

Your situation has changed/is changing, but you might want to consider whether you would want/need to return to NY (or another ban state) for a class, competition or perhaps a reunion with trapped friends. In my case, I like the idea that, WHEN I finally move out, I’ll be able to easily convert the ban-compliant rifle to free-state configuration by just swapping out the MRP barrel (ignoring, for the moment, the pinned stock). The barrel with the brake can stick around, in case I need to bring it back across the border.

Just a thought…

[ON EDIT: I’m clearly trying to justify my own position to myself, so please take this with a grain of salt…]

The MRP is at or near the top of my list of ARs I want to get soon. My thinking is I want the longer MRP rail and outfit with a 14.5 or 16" CL barrel for general practice and burning rounds downrange. Then if I want to shoot precision long range I could switch out the barrel for a 16" stainless and magnified optic.

Also having the option to maybe shoot 6.8 for whitetail deer hunting.

Or 300 Blackout, or maybe…6.5 Grendal!
