For all of you other cheap MF'ers out there.

Unplugged from cable, email your Senators.

http://www.keepmytv.org/default.asp

While you’re at it, email the cable companies imvolved and tell them they’re a bunch slimy bastards.

What do you use for internet?

I cut cable about a year ago since I never watch TV and all my kids watch is Netflix. Maybe I’m missing something here, but as a general rule I don’t tend to get upset about not getting something free. Nobody owes me news or sports.

Outside of PBS, none of the local TV channels are free. They’re bought and paid for by advertisers - wouldn’t be a reason for them to show ads elsewise.

If, however, somebody expects me to pay money for something that is being paid for and brought to my door by the advertisers, they can go screw themselves. Or they can dump the advertisements. But then, I’ll just pay for PBS and not pay for anyone else. (I guess that’s what it would take to get me to actually give my local PBS station a pledge.)

Also: Haven’t had cable in five or six years. Don’t really miss it. Except HBO, but you have to pay extra on top of the regular cable fees. If I could just pay for HBO, I would.

Never happen. Free shit army would revolt. I’ll put a caveat on that. Unless big .gov is given an option to dispense it to their voting bloc as a perk being “given” to them for their continued docility/brain washing.

no cable TV here

hate the commercials and what they play even on shows kids watch !
between netflix and amazon prime and the fact so many stations and all controlled from Roku I can watch shows on there web site I see no need for cable anymore

kinda like phones ? we have not had a land line in over 10 years or longer ? no need IMHO cable is going to go the same way at some point just going to take a while for those to realize they don’t need cable anymore

The worst companies in the nation include the cable & satellite operations, which are literally just organized crime…

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/07/the-19-most-hated-companies-in-america/241344/

The American Customer Satisfaction Index rates companies based on thousands of surveys. In the latest index, the most-hated companies include large banks, airlines, power and telecom companies.

Of the nineteen worst companies in America, five are telecoms, three of which are ranked in the top five as worst in the country!!!Not a very good, or responsible idea to just conclude that this is just free marketeering, its not, its monopolizing the nations television communications systems, and forcing you to pay for any of it, regardless…

Netflix. Hulu. Amazon Prime. Most local TV stations have on-line streaming of the news, so I usually fire that up in the evenings when I am cooking supper.

Whoever mentioned that you are paying for something, that has already been paid for with advertising, hit the nail squarely on the head. I ain’t gonna pay for something so you can advertise to me. Go piss up a rope.

May the cable companies go to hell, and pull the hole in with 'em! I absolutely hate those bastards.

I haven’t had cable in almost five years. If Netflix, Hulu, etc. put ads on, I will drop them like a sack of turds too.

First world problems…

What do you use for internet?

I know what you are getting at about who is your internet ? but that will have to change and as long as they do not get the monopoly on it like they have now ? some other carriers like the wireless will come through as we move forward etc…

for sure though maybe cox and other companies will loose a ton of money and be more internet ? what will that do to the price of our internet is unknown ?

Crookcast.

I’m not trying to call anyone out or make anyone out to be a hypocrite, but you should look at is as those ads reduce your cable bill, not increase their profits.

Virtually every website you’ll ever visit has ads, including this one. Advertising on cable TV is win win for everyone. Cable companies take a small cut, it lowers your bill, and it gets local companies on people’s minds.

If you’re already paying a cable company for internet, I don’t see how paying them for television is verboten…unless you just don’t watch television. Besides, with DVR you don’t have to watch any ads at all unless it’s live programming.

Astute points.

My issue is, after years of not watching “regular” TV, it’s insufferable to sit through.

My bill, with the streaming services, is still 1/3 of what it was with “basic cable”.

Misses Outlander and I stayed with her parents while we were doing some renovations on her house. It really hit home how much “regular” TV sucked ass. Other than Pawn Stars.

; )

I’m getting internet where I live. From Cox. Self install including picking up the equipment myself costs $30. Unreal.

My current internet is uh hotspot based. I have unlimited 4g through Verizon still. They don’t like me, last month I logged 215GB in HD streaming since I don’t have cable.

^^^^ that, right there! is how it’s done! son!

Damn!! I only have 500mb of data once I stupidly altered my contract and lost unlimited data. I refuse to pay more than $75 a month for wireless, but I sure miss watching hulu 24/7 from my phone.

ETA MB not GB

Don’t mean to rain on your parade, but wanted to give you a heads up. VZW is working to stop unlimited services for those who still have it. At least according to the mobile tech sites I read.

I think the real story is that TV, the internet, etc has become so ingrained that we as a society now consider it a “need” as opposed to what it really is…a “want”. Bottom line is it’s an uneccesary consumer product just like anything else. Typically if something costs more than we want to pay, we simply don’t buy it and move on, and respect the fact that they can charge whatever they want in our wonderful free market system. But for some reason we’ve come to believe we can’t live without TV or internet or a fancy phone and raise hell about the cost like we’re being gouged on a necessity. Fact is, you simply don’t need cable TV or high speed internet or a smart phone. Hell, you really don’t even NEED a dumb phone.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m typing this on an iPhone as we speak. But when I get my cell phone bill at the end of the month I don’t say “How dare they charge that!”, I say “Man, what an idiot I am for paying that”.

To me the argument made for demanding free TV sounds about the same as the argument for free Obama phones.

ETA: and I’m not addressing anyone in particular, or even just this member base. Just some general thoughts on complaints I hear constantly all over the place.

Murikan’ problems… I’m fixing to cut our cable. Its blows a big one…
