I think I’m getting my groove back. I noticed something shooting some 1k practice this morning with my FN - I don’t even hear the blast of my rifle anymore when I squeeze one off. Instead, my perception is one of a far-off ‘KNOCK’ sound that sounds to me like someone briskly rapped the forestock of my rifle with a wooden hammer.
The closest thing like it is when you’re really in your bubble with your AR, and it seems like all you can here is the Slinky sound in your right ear.
The integrated act of firing is becoming just that again. I am getting to the point where I can just think ‘check the wind, correct the hold, and send it’ without thinking about the trigger, what the rear bag feels like, the position of the gun in my shoulder, or anything else. Just press and KNOCK.
Odd perception. I think it signifies an improvement, though, and the scores seem to reflect that.
That’s awesome, I love that feeling when I can achieve it. THere are few thing more gratifying than what you described. Nice job.
That is awesome to read; I read about something like this or pistol zen on PF or Enos forums and its one of the things that keeps me interested in all this. I havent attained it and still get tight with my movements feeling more like steps than fluid motion. I am anxious for it, I have felt it in other sports in my life at times, and nothing beats it.
Congrats on your success.
Remember Plaxco’s book?, he references the three stages of learning. I believe you’ve reached stage three with some skills as per your post and observations.
1-Conscious of every small detail
2-Some conscious thought and some “subconscious” (conditioned response).
3-“Auto pilot” Manipulations, learned skills are running with the program you choose. More or less you free your mind of those conscious thought to operate and leave your mind open to the decision making.
Beginners are normally in stage one, EVERYBODY should be in two when in training as you are there to refine skill and have some deficiency to correct.
Excellent work and keep it up!
“Get in your bubble!” as the man above said many times over.
It IS awesome. But when it started happening, just a couple of weeks ago, I broke my stockweld and looked down the side of the gun, thinking I’d fired a squib or something. The recoil is there but as I said the sound is really muted and different, like what I imagine it would sound and feel like in a space suit with the helmet on.
It’s a weird combination of feeling isolated but hyperaware - I still see and hear everything around me, I am still watching the wind and environment, but it feels like I have more time to observe and process, like everything else is running a little slowly but I’m still thinking in real time. Very fascinating, centered feeling. Sort of like Bruce Ree said in Enter The Dragon: “I don’t hit. IT hits all by itself.”
