A good friend of mine is really excited about the FNP-45 and has my interest up as well.
My present choice in full size .45’s is the G21SF, which I like especially for the capacity, 13+1=14. I have a G30 which I like very much, as well.
I’ve considered adding an HK45 or the M&P45 because I know both are proven, well-respected guns. What’s held me back on both of those is my preference for higher capacity… if I’m going to have a full-size gun. Both of those are just 10+1 guns. I’ve got 10+1 with my G30, which has proven to be a superb defense .45, accurate, reliable, soft-shooting, and enjoyable to shoot.
Anyway, the FNP-45 has 15+1 capacity in .45 cal, which is a significant specification indeed and has my interest piqued compared to the 10+1 offerings. Higher capacity is something that’s important to me, as long as it is attained without significant compromise of any important elements. I also like the fact that it has the traditional hammer action and the ability to carry cocked and locked, like a 1911, so every shot is SA. (I dislike DA/SA shooting.)
I know the FNP-45 is relatively costly, but aside from that… I’m wondering how it stacks up to the HK45 and M&P45 in handling, shootability, and reliability. I sure looks like it could be a contender for top choice for a full size .45.
I shot a friends HK45 just recently and really liked it compared to the Glock 21. The recoil seemed much more manageable. I own an FNP-9 that I have been very impressed with. I’d like to shoot the 45 at some point.
Personally, I find the FNP in .45 to have ergos like a 2x4. Even with the smallest grip insert installed it is just too damn big for my hands…and my hands are fairly large.
The HK45 is as close to bomb proof as you’re going to get in a handgun. I don’t think there are many other handguns that can come close to matching what it’s been put through in testing and use like the NSWG has done with it.
I agree i really like my G21sf rtf2 and HK USP .45. Buds Gunshop was running the FN 45’s for $514 with 3 mags and the stainless or black stainless slide. The FN’s i think are trying to sell a very high number of guns in the US. I don’t keep up with FN much but i forgot the source and very large number of sales they want this year. The price at Buds seems like a good price.
I haven’t handled one yet, so I really need to do that.
Ive been quite happy with the G21SF. My only gripe with my G21SF was the slippery grip, but I put a TalonGrip wrap on it and totally love the change. I think the G21SF with RTF must really be sweet. I’m very eager to see the G21 Gen4!
I prefer the M&P 45 and the capacity issue means nada as I’m a firm believer in shot placement. That said, I had a chance to handle the FN Tactical 45 and while it’s a nice looking gun I found it bulky and nowhere near as ergonomic as the M&Ps.
I think the M&P45 and the HK45 are fine weapons, but that said, I prefer greater capacity than they offer… therefore my current use of the G21SF, great interest in the upcoming G21 Gen 4, and FNH45.
Not sure why you would presume that “believing” in shot placement negates the benefit of greater capacity. Striving to hit as well as possible is a given, regardless of the weapon being used or it’s capacity, so I’m not sure why it sometimes gets mentioned in an attempt to dismiss the clear benefit of having greater capacity.
With such a mindset, one might as well carry a single shot pistol. Defensive situations, including the number of threats, can never be predicted. Under the extreme duress of a defensive encounter one is foremost striving to move off the “X”, not get hit, closely followed by attempting to stop the threat(s)… in these situations, you cannot expect to achieve your objective of surviving with any particular number of rounds on tap. Many rounds may not achieve their intended goal, for a variety of reasons, regardless of one’s “belief” in shot placement. Therefore, it’s always a good thing to have somewhat greater capacity, if possible, provided the cost of doing so is not prohibitive.
“Believing” in shot placement (better yet, striving to hit as well as possible) is a good thing regardless of capacity, but believing in it and striving for it doesn’t negate the value and benefit of higher capacity any more than possessing higher capacity negates the value of hitting well. Confusing the two disparate objectives is an attempt to compensate for a short coming.

The rtf2 texture is my favorite glocks. I have a 21, 19,17 and 22 the 21sf is my favorite. The 21’s texture is less aggressive than my smaller ones. My thought’s are there is a larger area for the pyramids displacement than the smaller rtf2’s just a thought and my .02. Your talon grip on your 21sf is a good idea. I shoot alot of .45 +P the texture helps. But when i first held a 19 rtf2 i thought no way this feels terrible but they tame some with use plus i got used to the feel.
Yes, the TalonGrip wrap-around made my 21SF fantastic to hold and shoot. And I agree with you on the RTF - they feel great! I bought a G17 Gen3 RTF on Friday and I LOVE the sharp texture and the way it bites into the hand. I also put the TalonGrip wrap on my G30 and G19. Wonderful texture and grip in the hand now. The RTF grip and the (somewhat toned down) Gen4 grip have made the Glock grips my favorite, now. I’m eagerly awaiting the G21 Gen 4! And a G19 Gen 4 will be coming shortly as well. I think the Gen 4 grips are a fantastic move for Glocks. No stippling (or TalonGrip wraps) ever needed again with the move to Gen 4 grips.
I know I will recieve a thrashing for this:sarcastic:but after handling both I would honestly take a XD45 Tactical over the FN.My first pick would be the M&P or the HK, and you own the 21. The FN45 really felt huge in my hand, and I have no probs with a Glock 21.The XD I had felt and shot great. If you have the itch for the FN you may as well get it, it won’t go away till you do.
Interesting… sounds like the FNH-45 feels even bigger in the grip than a 21SF? In that case, I may not like it that much. (I am looking forward to the G21 Gen 4!)
The XD’s just don’t appeal to me. The bore axis feels close to the ceiling for me. I had an XD 9 compact for a short time and got rid of it because of the high bore axis, mostly.
I know what you mean about itches for guns! But I am very much a fan of Glocks and the G21 Gen 4 would easily scratch my itch for another full size .45 - probably moreso than the FNH-45 if the grip on the FNH-45 doesn’t feel as good as the G21 Gen4.
Another concern I have is that I really dislike DA/SA pistols. The fact that the FNH-45 can be carried cocked and locked for all-SA trigger action was appealing until I realized that sometimes, for some people, flipping down the safety can go a little too far and decock the hammer. Not good.
I carried a G21 for roughly 10 years as a duty gun as well as shooting IPSC with it. I trust the platform completely. A while back I picked up a 21SF. I like it even better.
Though I have played with other high cap 45s, the G21 is a no brainer for me.
In fact, I have long considered consolidating down to 3 G19s and 3 G21s and getting rid of numerous others, as far as carry gun needs go.
Anyone compare it to a non-SF G21? I actually prefer the bigger grip of the non-SF and the FNP really has my attention. I haven’t found any to try out around here yet.
