FNH SCAR coming soon to a store near you

Local shop had a FNH sale today, talked to factory reps about the SCAR. Right now only LE sales are being made, civilian sales are supposed to start by end of year and production will be about 1000 units per month. The SCAR heavy in .308 will be out February 09 according to the rep. I got to look at the class 3 sample for LE sales they had. Nice gun. Ambi controls and mag release, ergonomics feel good, pistol grip is standard AR type so you can customize a bit. No word on price for civilian models yet but I am sure it will be steep. I am tempted to get one but will probably stay with an AR due to parts availability and already being familiar with most armorer skills on the AR.

I want one, I need one and I must have one or I will die.

I had a chance to put 4-5 magzines through a scar light unsuppressed, a mix of auto and semi, all on steel.

In my boring, short, uneducated opinion, Yeah…its pretty damn cool.

I have to admit, I’ve lost some interest in the SCAR. The build up has been too long for my taste and so many solid products have been announced

I’ll just wait and see what FN does. Until there is some official announcement, I am somewhat indifferent, irrespective of the quality of the finished product.

When they build it, my money will come.

I have the LE oriented flyer from SHOT, and they don’t list a 16" barrel.

I am very eager for the commercial release of the SCAR series…at least two will be finding a home with me.

The Mk16 SCAR-L and Mk17 SCAR-H are the two most well developed small arms in the history of the USA (probably the world). There is not a single facit of the weapon that hasn’t been beat to death, re-evaluated, and then sustained/improved. There have been multiple End User Assessments along the way to ensure that this is the rifle that our war fighters really want. They have a much stricter accuracy requirement than the M4/M16 and that’s with the ability to change the barrel out at the user level.

After years of coveting the SCAR-L I finally got to shoot several mags through one recently (in addition to watching it run flawlessly for 3 days) and I for one will be buying up as many of these weapons as I can afford.

My crystal ball shows the rest of the Army buying the SCAR in a few years…

Could you run that crystal ball by Congress when you get a chance…

Thanks, That would be great !

I’m eager to see one in real life and to handle it. I only know the SCAR from video games.

At the SHOT show, I had the luck to hold and dry fire one. I forgot to ask them what color(s) stock/receiver will be available other then the tan I saw. Any 411?

Does anyone have any info on the “extended receiver” version? I remember seeing a couple of FN marketing pics with one in the background, but I can’t find it now to save my life.

A 16" barrel and the extended receiver would be ideal for a civilian in a non-SBR state like mine.

I wanna get one when they are released, but I am trying to figure out how you got “coming soon” out of “end of year”. 9+months does not =coming soon.

From the horse’s mouth:

We hope to have these in limited numbers sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.

The shortest barrel length on the Civilian SCAR will be 16”.

This was in response to my asking when civi availability will happen, and if the CQB model would be available for customers willing to jump through the NFA SBR hoops.

That’s what I heard to. The mil wants a quiet safety selector and that should be the only delay. I was told last Friday that it would be May before LE’s start seeing the guns. Mil guns after that then civ sales. 308 in Feb 2009. Can’t wait for the 308. No one saying how much the light or heavy will cost but I was told it will be competitively priced. What ever that means.

i found this is this what your looking for?

The gun I was playing with Friday looks like that.
EDIT:
On a second look no it’s not. The one I was playing with had a flip up sight on the gas block.

I haven’t heard that it’s going to be adopted…it really was just a wild-ass guess.

As soon as pics of SOF with the SCAR hit CNN coupled with the M4s (comparatively) poor performance in recent trials, people will start going “How come they get a new gun, obviously the M4 wasn’t good enough for our nations elite” yadda yadda and the Army will buy everyone a new gun. I bet they buy the one that’s already tested and proven.

The info I hear says the DOD would like to have the SCAR replace the M4. Current thinking for a more effective round or going back to a proven round (308) may just happen in the form of the SCAR Light and SCAR Heavy. Some of the military think that the SCAR is really the next step in the evolution of the M16/M4. Only time will tell. But for now some LE and CIV’s will have all the fun with the SCAR.
