I find lots of good info on this site.

I’m surprised I don’t see more info here about the SLP MKI.

I’ve been using one for a while now and it is a great shotgun. I run mine hard and it holds up (mostly 3 gun/multi gun and training) . It comes from the factory like a shotgun should. I can use any of the heavy shell down to 1 oz reliably. A few days ago I ran some 7/8 oz with no issue (only 25 shells).

Until I put about 300 shells through it I had problems with 1 oz stuff, but have not had any issues at all since. It also had problems with the Walmart Winchester bulk packs for the first 300. It ran the Remington 1300 fps in 1 1/8 oz reliably from the start. After 300 shells I have been able to run anything I want.

It ran perfect from shell 1 with buck and slug.

I have not kept up with the shell count very well, but it is currently over 4000.

Mine is the SLP MKI (not the rifled barrel). I added the tri rail. They have an 18" version - I just went with the MK1 for the longer barrel/shell capacity since mine is really more for sport. I don’t keep it for personal protection.

The SLP is basically a Winchester SX2. The Winchester is lighter. I went with the SLP for the way it is set up from the factory.

I have an old 870 that I trust and it has been good to me, but when I decided to go to a semi auto it was tough to decide what to get. I tried out the Mossberg 930, Remington 1100 (three different versions), Beretta Xtrema,Browning Gold, Benelli M4, and Benelli M2 - along with the SLP MK I. Some of the others ran well too, but cost much more to set up the way I wanted mine set up. I wasn’t going for an exact budget, but just wanted the most bang for the dollar.

I’m not posting this to start a what’s better war, just to say there is another shotgun out there to consider.

Slugs have run perfectly, no issues at all - I have only run them out to 100 yards. The sights are set up to easily run slugs and with mine I have found where to use the sights for different distances. Different slugs give a different poa/poi. If you run the sights the same way you’ll probably be impacting high. The sights are set up well for correcting for distance and brand. I get different results with different slugs.

It comes with a different piston for heavier stuff like slugs and from what I understand that will decrease felt recoil. I leave in the light piston and it runs everything. The way I use the shotgun I will shoot bird, buck, and slug all in the same run. Some folks leave in the other piston all the time and say they get the same results, I haven’t tried it yet. Even with the light piston the felt recoil is minimal for a 12 gauge.

For a sling I’m using the Urban ERT, I already had it and just bought a few more adapters.

I don’t even notice it when I’m shooting. I did throw an Aimpoint on it just for fun once and it was fun to run it that way. I’m sure it adds some unnecessary weight.

It’s attached to the barrel and when the barrel is off the receiver has the regular taps for attaching stuff.

I know they sell longer barrels for the MKI, so I wonder if you could get another 22" without the rail.

Should have put this in my original post, but my MKI runs great when ghost loaded also, so it easily runs 10 shells.

I’ve been using a FN SLP MK1 for almost two years now for 3 gun. Damn good shotgun.

I’m using the 3gungear.com & Mark Otto velcro’d on side saddles, Nordic Components bolt release button, charging handle and 1 shot extension,
Briley extended chokes in Skeet, Improved Cylinder and Light Modified and I use the FN rail too for a little more muzzle weight.
I also use a Browning Gold Sporting Clays piston (made for 1 1/8 oz loads or lighter).

I picked up a SLP Mark 1 the first of the year. Haven’t regretted spending the dollars on it or for the EOTech XPS2 sight. Was using a Benelli SuperNova before the Mark 1…now it is the backup gun for going to Front Sight.

I’ve got a FN SLP with the Nordic bolt handle and shell follower. There’s a rumor that Mesa Tactical is in the process of developing a SureShell Shotshell carrier for the FN.

The photo I included in my previous post shows a two round soft carrier from 3gun.com. With those to rounds, it puts the total for the Mark 1 to twelve rounds. 2 in that holder and 8+1+1 in the firearm. (yes, you can ghost a round)

A buddy of mine took a Tacstar 6 shot side saddle for a Rem 870, tossed the mounting hardware, and put a 2" wide strip of Velcro on the back of it and also on the side of the receiver. It works great. He ran it through a 2 day tactical course at Front Sight earlier this month. Oh…this was mounted on a Winchester SX2…same design as my SLP Mark 1.

I have the SLP (18 inch version) with a nordic bolt handle extension and a 6 shot side saddle. I actually wish I would have got the 4 shot saddle instead of the six but that ins another story altogether. I replaced the rear ghost ring sight and front sight post for ones with tritium inserts and I also had some custom work done by Hatfields in Manassas, VA to enlarge the bolt release with a Benelli speed button to make it easier to find by touch and open up a scallop in the fore-stock to make feeding shells easier.

Great shotgun, never had a misfire though I have only a few hundred rounds through it. Its my beside the bed gun loaded with 00 Buck.

Can anyone explain why the MK 1 versions have cantilever optic rails instead of the receiver mounted rails like the normal SLP?

On my FN SLP Mk1 (22" model) the optic mount is connected to the barrel. As is the brand new one we have on the wall at the shop.
I think you’re talking about the 18" models.

I always assumed it as designed that way so that your optic would go along with the barrel. I run an EOTech optic on mine. It would make it pretty easy if I wanted to swap over to a longer barrel for bird hunting.

What I mean is: Why does the 22" version have a rail attached to the barrel (and cantilevered back over the receiver), while the 18" version has a rail bolted straight to the receiver?

Why not have both set up with receiver rails? Or both set up with cantilevered rails?

I would imagine because one might sight in their optic with slugs and would lose their zero when changing barrels. The one we have at work has a rifled barrel. If my boss can get a smooth bore removable choke barrel for it I’m going to buy the rifled barrel for deer hunting here in Virginia and use sabot slugs and an Aimpoint.

Anyone have a chance to play with the model with the pistol grip stock and adjustable comb? I am debating hard about getting one of these but haven’t found one with the pistol grip stock to handle yet. I really like the feel of the SLP MK1. The tactical version is nice but the raised sights seem just a slight bit high for me to get a good cheek weld.

Thanks for the reviews and pics guys. I’ve been looking everywhere locally, and not one to be found. Could someone shoot prices and places to search? Would love to get my hands on one.
