I’m currently in the process of acquiring a new long gun and the SCAR is on my my list of candidates.
My problem is that for the life of me, I can’t figure out how I would go about clearing a double feed.
I’m right handed, so naturally I would assume that the charging handle should go on the left side of the gun. The problem that I’ve found is that if I pull the charging handle with my left hand, my right hand has issues holding the bolt catch (assuming that’s what it’s called on the SCAR). So if that’s a no-go, then the next way I could imagine is pulling the charging handle with my right hand (over or under the gun, kinda like a reversed AK method), then pressing the bolt catch with my left hand. This also seems awkward and less positive when I pull the charging handle.
So, what about setting up the charging handle on the right side of the gun? This would allow me to pull the charging handle with my right hand, and lock the bolt back with my left. The problem though is that for everything else requiring the charging handle (including the double feed) I have to take my firing hand off of firing control for longer than necessary compared to if the charging handle was on the left.
So here I am wondering what is a good way to go about this? Unfortunately the only SCAR handling time I’ve had has been fondle sessions at my local gun store, so I can’t really work through it on my own.
Any ideas?
