Here in Montana we have a former Navy SEAL running on the Republican ticket facing off against a former staffer for retired Democratic Senator Max Baucus for our lone House seat. The Montana Democratic party apparatchiks got wind of some sort of stink in Zinke’s (the former SEAL) military records, fueled by disparaging comments made by one of Zinke’s former commanding officers who resides back east (who apparently had some sort of ax to grind).
The upshot is Zinke’s opponents have been hounding him about these “missing” service records since the primaries back in June, insinuating that Zinke was drummed out of the Navy and blackballed for further promotion after some egregious breach of ethics or failure of command. Well, the Navy finally released the missing records (fitness reports) last week.
Yep, Zinke ****ed up and had to reimburse the Navy $211 for travel expenses when he apparently traveled to Montana to scout training locations for SEAL teams in Montana and made a pit stop at his home in Whitefish, MT. And these same reports also contained all manner of damning comments regarding Zinke’s character and leadership, such as:
“(d)ynamic decisive and intelligent. Excels at the most complex taskings and assignments.”
“outstanding operational and fiduciary oversight for more than 200 command high-risk training events while managing an annual O&M (operations and maintenance) budget in excel of $10 (million).”
“a nothing short of spectacular performance.”
a “brilliant” chief staff officer “who excels at leading the largest command in Naval Special Warfare. In my 28 years of active duty, nobody does it better or with more enthusiasm, integrity and courageous leadership. … A superstar.”
“a savvy, experienced war-fighter proving equally adept in management.”
“My number one CDR (commander) and ranks among the finest officers that I have served with during my 36 years of active duty. A superstar who has earned my complete trust and strongest personal recommendations for an immediate CO (commanding officer) assignment. … If you screen just one officer for command, screen CDR (Commander) Zinke. He is that good!”
And the praise from Zinke’s superior officers goes on and on.
What’s that old lawyer’s adage about never asking a question you don’t already know the answer to.
And yet, despite having the whole affair blow up in their face like a Wiley Coyote cartoon, the Montana Democratic Party soldiered on, releasing this statement:
“There is nothing honorable about using taxpayer dollars for personal use, regardless of the amount. … Only after months of public pressure was Zinke fully willing to come clean with the people of Montana. Zinke lied to the people of Montana — he was pushed out of Seal Team Six for lapses in judgment that he’s been covering up.” (http://billingsgazette.com/news/government-and-politics/zinke-had-review-in-which-he-was-marked-down-for/article_33c88642-b3d8-5138-a679-441305ce3c67.html)
Yes, it seems Zinke’s commanders were indeed pushing him out of Seal (sic) Team Six. Because they wanted to promote him and send him to the Navy War College.
Which reminds me of another old saying: “When you find yourself in a hole, the first step is to STOP DIGGING!”
