Florida open carry

I always open carry when traveling in states that allow it. When I’m traveling I have a car full of stuff and a wonderful wife that I’d rather have anyone who would think about giving us trouble KNOW for a fact are guarded and thus deterred before a crime, rather than after it. Florida is definitely one state I’d love to OC in while visiting.

It was definitely a bummer that campus carry got dropped from the bill. :frowning:

This was definately dissapointing. I’ll have to check FL laws (as I’m going back to college soon). If it’s legal to carry on a college campus (just against rules) I’ll still carry. It’s pretty easy to conceal a handgun in a backpack. With crime like it is today and the recent college shootings I’ll take my risks as I’d rather not be dead.

Umm… that’s not really correct. There is only FS.790.10, Improper Exhibition of Firearm or Dangerous Weapon. There is no such statute specifically for “brandishing” a weapon. You may be thinking of FS 784.021 which is aggravated assault. Aggravated assault is simply an assault made with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill.

Anyway, I just wanted to clear that up for you.

It’s a third degree felony to possess a firearm on school grounds per FS 790.115.

The only time I open carry is when I am camping, hiking or doing outdoor stuff. Other than that I keep it concealed. Fortunately we have very sane firearms laws and don’t have to worry about “printing”, brandishing or other similar nonsense.

I strongly feel that OC is a crime deterrant and that’s how I always carry when in states that allow it. It’s also so much easier to dress than trying to conceal a worthwhile firearm. It is also just nice to be able to CC and not worry about unintentionally brandishing.

In living in Florida since 2003, and hearing of possible difficulty, or arrest by Police, for printing. No incident that I am aware of, has happened.

The many Police Officers, and retired Officers, that I know, or have spoken to, with many years of employment with OPD, or Orange County Sheriffs Office, have said they would inform an individual to “cover up” were a pistol was inadvertently exposed.

So while it is on the books, it seems to not be a problem.

Taking the Campus carry out of the OC law is not good, but if concealed carry was allowed for visitors, or students, would be better if allowed. One aspect of the so called “Make my day” law, if using a firearm to protect against criminal actions, even in circumstances not allowed by law, as in a convicted felon carrying a hand gun, the Castle Doctrine Law supersedes the illegal carry.

Robbery and Rape are problems on our Campuses, that the careful application of 1000 fps projectiles could fix!

You and I are carbon copies on this thought.

Are you sure that applies to a college campus as well? If so, looks like I wont be carrying for sure.

Yeah …

Thanks for the clarification Joe. I just picked up a copy of the Florida laws regarding weapons today. No campus carry is a real bummer. I can understand not being allowed to carry in a K-12 or below school but at a college campus… that’s rediculous.

No problem. I would rather see fellow gun enthusiasts stay out of trouble. :stuck_out_tongue:
