Florida And It's Recent Gun Range Suicides

DELETE.

Im struggling to find the humor in your post.

A shooting friend used to work at one of the local FL ranges. He rented a gun to an 18 year old boy/man who took the gun and box of ammo into the range and ended his life.
Sometime later I asked my friend if there was anything about the boy that struck him as unusual. There was nothing, zero that registered, just another shooter coming into to rent a pistol.
The range was investigated for renting to someone under 21. It was decided that renting to someone under 21 was legal, because he wasn’t legally in possession.

Even if they were “legally in possession”, possession of a handgun by an 18-20 year old is legal in Florida.

Doesn’t bother me, I have no pity on someone who takes there life.

Palmguy you are correct. Both my sons had guns at 18.

Let me try again…
Shooting ranges are allowed to rent handguns to people under 21.

Ultimately people are going to do whatever they want and there is not one goddamn thing anyone can do to stop it. If people really want to kill themselves, they are going to find a way regardless of the law.

The worst part is those 2 ranges even remotely acting like NICS checks for rentals is a good idea or necessary, or like it will even stop anything. How many psychos have legally bought guns and then shot up schools? Yeah they’d pass that rental check too.

I think you may be looking at this through a vary narrow peep hole. This occurs all over the country and from what I understand, it has also occurred in the NRA’s own range at Fairfax, VA during a Basic Pistol Class many moons ago.

You actually provided the reason you don’t see it in your neck of the woods, “We don’t rent firearms at my ranges”. Notice that most of the ones who attempted suicide are gun renters and not gun owners.

Basically, the only viable recourse for Gun Ranges anywhere is to stop renting guns to the general public. Unfortunately, this will not prevent a depressed individual from committing suicide because all it will do is limit the availability of that particular tool.

IMHO, the real issue that should be addressed is the ‘why’ not the ‘what’. I’m willing to bet the economy and the way this current POTUS is driving it further into the ground has a lot to do with it. JM2CW.

Yep. There is a media bias to report every negative gun related incident to further their cause and promote their agenda. Please don’t be fooled.

FWIW, just don’t get any grey matter on my shoes if’n ya have to…

WTF comes to mind when I read through this thread. If they didn’t rent a gun, they would steal or borrow a gun. If they didn’t steal or borrow a gun, they would hang themselves. If they didn’t hang themselves, they would take pills. If they didn’t take pills they would cut their wrists. If they didn’t cut their wrists, they would jump out in front of traffic. If they didn’t jump out in front of traffic, they would jump off a building… etc.

Renting guns, guns, the manufactures, and/or the ranges that rent the guns are no more responsible for suicides than pills, razor blades, vehicles, or tall buildings.

The other thing, stop getting sucked into the media. 360 million people in American or something close to that right? Even if 1000 people killed themselves with rented guns a gun ranges… I hardly see the epidemic. I hardly see the need for legislation restricting a PRIVATE BUSINESS OWNER from doing what he wants. Time to move on to larger issues folks.

Not sure who it was who called for legislation. Could there be any bias to your post?

Anyway, I do agree that it appears to be a non-issue based upon the other intelligent replies received earlier. Just something that we are not familiar with in my area for whatever reason. Simple as that, I understand now.

I agree we should move on.

All the hoopla about suicides on gun ranges are because of the time between the incidents and location that they occurred.

I’m willing to bet that FL wide, other methods of suicide, is higher.

As mentioned earlier, copy cats, ease of handgun rental, and it’s the most effective means for ending one’s life.

There is no way to prevent these types of suicides, except for more RO’s on duty, even then, the probability is still high to get away with committing the act.

A questionarre is for honest people.

An on duty Psychiatrist, is cost prohibitive.

One can not stop an individual that’s determined to take his or her’s own life.

A BG check no matter how thorough AFA FFLs go will not show you whos insane or will take their lives

Its another excuse to let the government butt into business that not theirs

I Live very close to the ranges where all this occured 3 times year to date. This really hits home, because I used to shoot up at this static range before I knew any better and joined a bigger outdoor club. It’s a scary thing. You can rent a gun and shoot with minimal effort. They swipe your id but what the hell does that really do? I mean the mother who killed her son before killing herself. Wack jobs. All the more reason to conceal carry and why those numbers are sky rocketing!!

I’m not convinced it’s regional.

I know a physician who was leaving a local range where guns are rented. As he was leaving, he was called back in from the parking lot by the owner and asked if he saw anything unusual. He said no, but went back in and checked out the guy who had just shot himself, but he was DRT.

That’s because people on this side of the Delaware, IF they choose to commit suicide by gun, simply walk through any one of the number of bad neighborhoods in Philly. Suicide by thug.

It is a shame that this happens where it does, where it can impact not only the range owners and other shooters, on top of the “victim’s” friends/family, but it has the potential to affect ALL of US. With the media obviously making more of these situations because of a firearm being involved, it reaches the masses (anti’s or just plain non-enthusiasts) much quicker, and is further-reaching. Some of these people will in turn form anti-gun opinions, which MAY lead to anti-gun votes. They’ll rally around city halls nation wide and come for our guns with pitchforks raised and torches burning…well, maybe not.
