Flip vs Fixed front sight

I currently run a Troy flip up front sight with an Aimpoint pro and a Troy flip up rear. Was thinking of going to a fixed front for simplicity. What are the thoughts of M4C?

I prefer a fixed front. However, if I had a folding front I would just run it up all the time instead of buying a new BUIS.

You will be looking at the fixed sight all of the time. Why do you want that? Why limit your view of a target with a fixed sight? Don’t drink the co-witness cool aid! With the PRO the iron front is a backup sight. Leave it folding. GH

I like having a fixed front or a folding front “up” with a red dont sight. It provides a reference point to help find the dot when mounting the gun. Sometimes when mounting in a hurry without a front sight as reference I find myself hunting for the red dot. I’ll look through the optic and not see the dot at all. This is lessened when using a fixed front or having the folding front “up”.

Just one perspective on it.

ETA: A front sight can also be helpful when in awkward positions in helping you find the dot quickly.

Both fixed and folding sights have pros and cons. There are several threads on here that I believe have rehashed this before.

That said. With me it depends on the mission of the rifle and what kinds of sights I am looking at. If I have FSB I would likely try to keep it since it is about as solid as you are going to get. If I am running a rail system however that is running over a LP gas block and then I am running an optic then I am inclined to run a folding BUIS set up. if Irons only, prefer a FSB, but if I am required to run a rail mounted sights and am irons only then a DD set up would likely be on my list.

Again, both have pros and cons and mission drives the rifle so it all depends. If everything is from a quality manufacturer and you shoot them well I wouldn’t worry about it much.

I run an Aimpoint H1 with 1/3 mount and KAC BUIS. I leave them down cause I don’t like them in my field of view till I need them.

I have no issues flipping up when I need them. My 45 offsets (kac) I leave up. The only fixed sight I like is an a2 fsp.

I run Troy HK style fixed front. For my use these are BUIS, and are meant to be ready asap in the event that my red dot goes down. They are meant as a safety net for an emergent scenario. If such an event occurred I know I can deploy a flip up rear quickly while keeping the gun on target. However, from what I’ve seen on Tac TV, LAV’s personal DD rig has both fixed front and rear. One can easily see the logic here as well, and I may go that route when I have time to train with the new optic arrangement.

I run my front folder up. Will be changing it out with a fixed unit as soon as I decide which one. I’m leaning towards the Samson HK style unit

I personally prefer both front and rear fixed sights when using a RDS. I run my Red Dots in lower 1/3rd and both sights remain out of the way when looking through the optic, however they are already in place and only require a quick drop in cheek weld to engage them if need be.

Back up irons are just that. They are there to back up an electronic piece of equipment. Electronics can and will fail at the worst possible moment. If I ever need my irons, I don’t want to waste the valuable time it takes to flip up two iron sights.

Lastly, a pinned fixed front sight post is the most rugged reliable front sight you can get.

The main thought is that you haven’t used the search feature at all. There are numerous discussions about fixed vs. folding sights.

I apologize IG. While in fact I did use the feature, I’ll do more searching.

My general rule is rds gets a fixed front and magnified optics get flip ups.

What’s wrong with the cowitness coolaid?? It tastes good! lol.

It usually works well with RDS like Aimpoints and Eotechs, and even lower end optics like Bushnell TRS and Primary Arms. Works even nicer if you have folding sights so you can fold them out of the way if you prefer.

+1

I like using flip up sets, like the MBUS. When using a scope, its almost a must unless you use an offset/45degree backup.

I’ve also used the A2 front and rear posts just fine, and those will still cowitness with most optics like Aimpoints and Eotechs.

I like having both my front and rear iron sights fixed and always in the lower 1/3 of my Aimpoint. I look right over the top of them and them being up and always there has never been an issue. I actually think it gets me to the center of my Aimpoint a little quicker. I just look over the rear sight and there’s the red dot. This is just the way I like to set up my carbines. YMMV.

Good luck, NYH1.

I run fixed fronts on any RDS equipped rifle. I use folding rears so I have the option of mounting a magnifier or NV.

I use folding front and rear on my rifles with a 1-4 and 2.5 -10.

Fixed front with a folding rear…and an Aimpoint CompM4s inbetween. Ive used fixed rear sights as well and they never bothered me. Use what ya got. If you have some extra cash laying around expiriment a lttle. But what you have is Provence yo work so no problems! But the fixed sights have less parts to break so are probably sturdier.

Depends on the mission of the rifle, Home defenders that will never see a shot longer then 25/50yds have flip up BUIS and a RDS with a larger 5 moa or 11 moa dot for instant acquisition . Scoped 1x4 (<300m rifles) all have flip up offsets were the dedicated precision rifles (4x> +300m use) have offset micro RDS. Fixed fronts are a waste IMHO for scoped rifles as it interferes with sight picture and forces higher bases to be used which alter cheek weld.

But I also feel that the fixed front sight is a must have on a military or patrol oriented rifle due to the rough use it will see during its career but with that said it is much less a factor for the home defender which rides a safe or closet 98% of its life.
