for some of you that have seen my threads here and read through them know i am wanting to build an AR for long range. something that i am wondering about with the more reading i am doing on the AR platform is if i would benifit having a Brake rather than the normal Flash hider.
from what i understand the Brake will tame some of the recoil where the Flash hider does jsut as its name suggests, so it has got me thinking that a Brake might do more for me than the FH.
the rifle i am wanting to build will be heavy i know with the 20" stainless BCM barrel would it be any benifit to me to have a Brake over a FH?
Are you going to shoot at night? If not, then a brake will help you more. Even with a heavy 20 inch the brake helps because it can tame recoil to the point that you can see your bullets hit small things at long range.
no wont be any night shooting. this is strictly going to be a bench gun only
If you plan on shooting suppressed in the future, then the brake will help prolong the life of the can.
Brakes can be loud if you plan on shooting indoors, although the 20" barrel may help to mitigate some of the sound. Judging by your statement that this would be primarily a bench gun, I don’t think that will be an issue.
The cost difference between a regular ol’ A2 bird cage and a fancy looking muzzle break is just not worth it on a 223 to me, money would be better spent on pmags and ammo
wont be shooting indoors so the sound level wont be any big deal for me.
i have heard that the Brakes are quite a bit louder than a normal style FH but thats fine with me.
Brakes aren’t too bad on recreational only guns. I’m running that friggin PWS on a test upper, and everyone around me hates it when I step up to shoot. ![]()
Get the best worlds, the Battle Comp!
Once you run a good brake, especially in run 'n gun competition, you won’t go back (well, probably).
And as mentioned, it’s very helpful to see the bullet impact on a precision rifle.
I’m almost ready to try a Battle Comp as well due to the relative reduction in noise - the videos show vertical rise to be about nill, but I’m still wondering about horizontal movement.
The battle comp is perfect at $99 or so… But at $149??? It’ll be a while before I can talk myself into it… Maybe Christmas time or something.
If you are building a range only rifle you will obviously
be using excellent hearing protection , and muzzle flash
is not very visible in daylight, so no negatives with a brake.
With a good brake/comp you will minimize recoil AND
muzzle rise. ![]()
Stag Comp brake for 17 bucks. Looks good, works, and priced right…
I just sold my PWS bake off my SCAR and put on an AAC blackout. Though I do a lot late night rabbit/coyote hunting…
Does anyone have any experience with the Troy Claymore or Medieval muzzle brakes? The Claymore looks similar to the Noveske Pig but runs less than $70.
Another vote for the Battle Comp…it’s money well spent.![]()
I stayed away from brakes for a long time. Vortex was as far as I’d go with muzzle devices, and it looked good! A few years ago I bought a cheap Cavarms brake because of a group buy with a cool phrase around the muzzle. I ended up using it on a build I had going on and was pleasantly surprised. Next up was a PWS, and it works well, though a little loud, on my 10.5 SBR. Then I bought and installed a battle comp on a 16" gun, voila. I now have 2 more on my bench waiting on completion of a 14.7", cut from 16", lightweight middie, and the arrival of a recently purchased KAC rifle. I’ll probably end up putting a 1.5 model on a BCM 14.5 middie as well.
