I was wondering what is involved for the seller to sell a handgun online? If I put it in the EE section, what all is required by me legally and how do I go about shipping it?
You can ship a hand gun yourself but you cant use USPS, only fedex or UPS. Its gonna cost around $50.00 to ship with them. All you have to do is ship it to his FFL after you get his FFLs info and check through the ATF web site to make sure its lagit. And dont ship it until you get the money in your acount. Thas about it…
Couple other things.
As a private individual you actually aren’t required to get a copy of the destination FFL, you are only required to make sure you are shipping to a valid FFL.
A lot of FFLs will no longer provide copies to individuals, they will only provide a portion of their license number for verification and you can only ship to that address.
And a lot of FFLs will not accept shipments from individuals. It’s not a law or anything, just what some FFLs do. So you may find you need to find a local FFL to ship it for you.
If you go to gunbroker.com they have a list of FFL in your area that will do transfers both ways.
I just did this. It was going to cost me to ship about $35 but as mentioned the receiving FFL would only accept from another FFL. Turns out I had an FFL 5 minutes away that only charged $25 and took me out of the loop. Knowing that now, I would never ship one myself.
The purchaser pays shipping so it’s usually better for them too.
I have sold 3 guns online and have shipped all of them through a local FFL. He charges a flat fee of $25 and provides me with copies of all the paperwork. He requires three pieces of information:
- Buyers name and address
- Seller’s name and address
- Buyer’s FFL information
One all the paperwork is in order, he packages and ships the weapon to the buyer’s FFL where the buyer can pick it up. I feel more comfortable doing it this way because of the paper trail.
