Hi I’m thinking of getting my first SBR the two I have seen locally are the Daniel Defense MK18 with a 10.3 barrel. The other is LWRC PSD same barrel length. I know they operate differently the DD is a DI and LWRC is piston. Are there any pros/cons with above rifles? And I thinking of getting a suppressor for it also.
Go DD and get a Syrac GB,
Ask Markm about LWRC
Skip both of those and build your own upper. Noveske and BCM barrels are both nicer than the DD 10.3, which tend to be significantly over gassed (especially if you’re planning to suppress). The DD RIS II MK18 rail is really nice, if a bit heavy, and you’ll probably want a Syrac or SLR adjustable gas block if you’re going to suppress.
EForms are running less than a month out right now, so get a trust and a quality stripped lower.
Don’t buy the LWRCi garbage.
I say build/register a lower and just order a 11.5" BCM upper with a 10" KMR… you won’t be disappointed.
Ok thanks for replys, what everyone is saying the best route is to get a stripped lower and have it engraved?
Absolutely. I agree with what’s been said above:
Buy/build a lower, have it engraved, eForm 1 and slap an 11.5" BCM on it.
…
Ok thanks for all the info so far, the eForm my FFL/SOT should do this correct? I already have s trust set up. As for engraving goes just my trust name?
If you are going to engrave, you need to do an eForm 1.
How to fill out an eForm 1:
https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?147975-Visual-guide-How-to-fill-out-a-Form-1-using-EFORMS
The above thread is extremely detailed. Stick to the pictures, unless you get confused.
For engraving you will need the name of trust and city/state:
XXXX TRUST
CITY, STATE
It all depends on which route you take.
If you’re going to buy one of the options you mentioned, it’s a Form 4, and you’ll need to work with the dealer on that. Even with a trust, you can’t use EForms at this point for the F4.
If you’re going to make your own, the Visual Guide that was linked above should be pretty helpful.
With an F4, no engraving requirement.
With an F1, full trust name and city, state. No abbreviations on the trust name, so if it has a long name, now is the time to fix that. Note that the city, state needs to be where you will make the firearm. That doesn’t necessarily mean the same address on your F1, or your home or work address. It’s where you physically assemble the firearm.
The engraving must be a minimum of .003". There is no height requirement for this engraving. (The 1/16" minimum you see discussed sometimes is for the serial number only).
This is what I ended up doing.
I’ll also add that since you can’t efile a Form 4 right now, you’ll have your SBR MUCH, MUCH faster if you efile a Form 1 on a lower and buy an upper separately.
I just got an eForm 1 approved today - 20 days.
Is this normal turnaround for eForm? Tomorrow I’m gonna order a stripped lower, now I gotta find a BCM 11.5 upper receiver. Looks like there all out on BCM website.
As of late, eForm 1’s have been extremely quick.
Have to just say thanks on all the quick easy, no nonsense replies. I’m forming a trust this week and absolutely dreaded asking same question as the OP and getting the “This is what the search function is for” response. I’ve been reading everything on form 1 and 4’s building versus buying, but this 1 thread with link summed it up for the newbie. I just couldn’t connect all the dots. This thread and link combined with a recent suppressor thread and I’ll be building my SBR this year and hopefully shooting it suppressed next year.
Thanks again,
Noah
