This build is almost complete. I just need a rear sight. I may change the EOtech for an AP Micro, but I will see.
This is my go to, and only rifle which is why I did it up exactly how I wanted it. I may eventually switch to 11.5" upper for reliability but being in Canada they are not the easiest to find complete. I found this upper for a pretty good deal brand new so I snatched it up.
Specs:
Upper:
Spikes Tactical LE 10.5" Complete
GFH Mod4
Eotech XPS3-0
ADM QD mount
Magpul MOE handguard
IWC mount n slot QD Sling Point
IWC TMC mount n slot
Surefire M300A with tape switch (may switch to Z68 to KISS. Switch is useful though not sure how reliable.)
VCAS Sling (may replace with model with 2 QD sling attachments)
Troy rear (not yet purchased)
A2 FH
Zip tie to keep wire from moving. OCD? May take it off, will see if it bothers me,
Lower:
Aero Stripped Lower
DD Parts kit
Magpul MIAD
LMT SOPMOD/milspec buffer
Spikes ST-T2 (also have Colt H2, which one should I use?)
Geissele SDE-Combat (contemplating it, not yet purchased, thoughts?)
BTW, this SOPMOD came with a Tan Alumahyde finish. I decided I wanted black and want to remove the paint. How do you suggest I go about this. I used a little paint thinner today but it didnt work as easy as I thought.
To be an SBR it needs to have a $200 tax stamp from the USA BATFE.
You just have a 10.5" barreled AR15…which is way cooler than an SBR anyway
Thoughts:
I’m assuming youre left handed. Get rid of the stupid zip tie, remove the tape switch and use the clicky tail cap. The IWC mount places the light in the perfect spot for tail cap activation.
I have no idea how to remove the paint without ruining the buttstock, but good luck
Looks good! I’d run it for a while with a simple GI trigger then make the decision on a ‘better’ trigger
I run the padded VCAS with the QD sewn in…it’s perfect IMO.
Just me, but I’d think about saving for an Aimpoint but that largely comes down to personal preference. Although I think the consensus is they’re the more reliable of the 2.
Pretty nice looking rifle there. I wouldn’t be too concerned about switching to the 11.5" barrel as long as your 10.5" runs. The EoTech XPS is a really good optic. I agree with others regarding the use of a tape switch, replace it with a good ole’ reliable tailcap.
Geissele triggers are nice (really nice), but not necessary. If you don’t have a lot a time with a standard GI trigger I suggest going that route first. Get really good trigger control with that; then you’ll be great with the Geissele.
As far as changing the color of your stock to black I believe you have 2 options; paint it or sell/trade it for a black one. Krylon works well, but will need to be touched up from time to time.
Regarding the eotech. I agree, aimpoint is way more reliable and the battery life is amazing, I just like the reticle of the Eotech better, also EOtech and Aimpoint are the same price used in Canada. My brothers getting the AP so I will compare and maybe eventually own both.
Regarding light placement. I am a righty not a lefty :p. The light placed on the left side cramps my hand up a little. I like to keep the stock as collapsed as possible to maintain the shortest OAL. Also, I like to wrap my thumb a little over the top so its natural to activate on the right.
The stock I will probably end up spraying. Its easier.
i would try using rit-dye to permanently color your stock black. just boil water, add black rit-dye, set your stock in the water, and let sit for about 10 minutes!
I wasn’t paying attention, the sling is on the correct side for a normal human being.
I know what you mean. Its a very nice grip and easy to activate the light but…you have a zip tie on your rifle. There has to be a better way of taking care of that wire.
Hmm, I may have to try that dye technique. Thanks for the tip! Any pics of anyone thats done that?
About the zip tie, its gone The wire sits fine at the top and doesnt really move without it. I do prefer the tape switch for feel though. It gives me an extra inch or so of reach which helps.
thanks for the links. The dye sounds promising, but if I can get rid of the paint thats even better. The link above recommended Kleen Strip Premium Paint Stripper. I may give this a go and see if it works. The question is, is it safe on plastics?
I can’t speak for the SOPMOD stock but for me it was safe on magpul polymers. The guy in the link also used his on Tango down ladder panels and said it was fine.
I think you’ll be ok. Just test it out on a small section.
