Just finished my first AR build. After shooting for a month with irons, I’d like to reach out farther. My local ranges go out to 200yds, and my closest and most often shot is 100yds. I’d like/need magnification @ 50+ (I have crappy 50 y/o eyes). I am hoping for a sub $500 entry level scope. thanks for your suggestions.
leupold patrol.
^^^What I did^^^
I can see the value. But… Is it worth an extra 100 ?
Over what?
I just picked up an SWFA SS Classic 1-4x24 a couple of months ago and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s a great value for the money.

The only drawback is that the illumination isn’t full daylight bright. But the glass quality is excellent!
I don’t understand.
I like my Vortex PST 1-4 but have no experience with the Leopold or SWFA mentioned above.
You can find the Patrol for $525 if you look around. There is a lightly used one over at the hide for $500 including Aluminum caps (A $90= value). If you can do without the SPR reticle and exposed turrets the VXR HOG can be had for under $400. It still has the fire dot. IMO the Patrol would be a better scope without the exposed turrets. I tried to get Leupold custom shop to put the SPR reticle in a HOG but they wouldn’t do it.
Are you just sticking to the range, or doing other types of shooting? You could pick up a decent fixed mag scope from SWFA (http://swfa.com/Classic-C12502.aspx), add an Aero mount, and be on your way for a good day at the range.
Just range
I’ll keep looking thanks for the suggestions
Vortex PST 1-4x is nice scope. I had one until I realized I was the opposite of you and wanting 1x all the time and less weight.
I like my Accupower.
I’m looking at the Leupold 1.25-4 patrol myself. I’ve done lots of research into scopes lately, many many hours, and I think it’s the most versatile scope on the market without paying three or four times as much.
